MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD. OREGON, SUNDAY, JULY 12, 1942. PAGE THREE Florence Rice Joins Filmdom's Rogue River Valley Ranch Colony IN SAMS VALLEY BOUGHTBY STAR Former Morrill Property Show Place in Boom Days Plans Fine Home. The Rogue River valley's film star colony has received a new addition this time the charm ing Florence Rice, accomplished daughter of Grantland Rice, na tionally known sports commen tator and writer, of New York. Miss Rice has purchased the ranch known as the Riverside Orchard, on Rogue river, in the Sams Valley area. In addition to the Riverside Orchard, which includes about 105 acres, the actress has purchased five acres from the John S. Day ranch ad Joining and also fronting the riwer. The smaller tract is a walnut orchard. The Riverside Orchard, which was obtained from W. L. Sew ard, was formerly owned by J. F. Morrill and was one of the show places of the valley dur ing the pear ranch boom days over a quarter century ago. Miss Rice plans to build a home on the site where the spacious Morrill residence was destroyed by fire several years ago. The beautiful setting among the trees overlooks the farm and the river and is surrounded by a swimming pool, tennis court, rock garden, fish ponds and other improvements. In addition to the large home, the new owner expects to build a guest cottage on the bank of the river where there is an ex cellent swimming hole and fine sandy beach for sun bathing. The river frontage includes several excellent fishing places where gamy steelhead and sal mon may be taken as well as the smaller trout. Miss Rice's Interest In the Rogue River valley is said to have been aroused by George Murphy, another screen favor ite, who last year bought 20S acres on the Rogue about 32 miles north of Medford. Mur phy has inaugurated many im provements on his place and is going in for the raising of blooded hogs. The advent of film notables on the river really springs from the interest of Ginger Rogers and her mother, Lela Rogers, the first to purchase property on the scenic stream. Through the addition of adjoining par cels of land since her original investment. Miss Rogers now owns over 1,050 acres near Eagle Point, with 2Vi miles of river frontage. On the property purchased by Miss Rice are a modern tenant house, large barn, equipped for grade A milk production and other buildings. The star expressed herself as very happy over acquiring the property and-she is optimistic as to the future of general farm ing, fruit and stock raising in the Rogue River valley, as well as the recreational opportunities along the stream. The purchase was negotiated through the Real Estate Ex change, operated by Elmer Her ried, at 44 North Riverside ave- E Washington, July 11- The agriculture department an nounced today increases of about $40 a ton in prices which it will pay growers for dried apricots and pears for shipment to Great Britain and Russia under the lend-lease program. The prices will average rough ly S380 a ton for dried apricots and $260 a ton for pears. These prices supercede those announ ced bv the department on June 20. Officials said the revision was necessary to encourage maxi mum production of these crops by assisting growers in meeting increased production costs and to better align the prices for the fruits used for drying with those used for canning. vu ::v 1 5 v. : r a.i V . TELLS OF LIFE IN FAR ICELAND "The women of Iceland are very beautiful, the men are tall and husky and the children are big-boned and healthy. They are generally blonde and red-haired. Without exception they are red cheeked. Where our cheeks might be pink or rosy, theirs are the color of dark lip rouge visible at twenty to thirty yards." This was the observation of Captain Raymond W. Sellers of the U. S. army upon his arrival in Iceland with army contin gents. Captain Sellers, whose father resides in Wenatchee, Wash., is the nephew of Dr. E. W. Barnum of 328 North Oak dale avenue. In his letter Captain Sellers wrote: "During their entire his tory the Icelanders have never had an army or navy. Conse quently they view with awe, wonder and. possibly with sus picion the activities of the troops of occupation. Those who have business with the troops are very friendly and business like." Captain Sellers wrote that "for all practical purposes the two main industries are fishing and sheep-raising. About sixty per cent are fishermen and about forty per cent own graz ing lands and raise sheep. The small remainder have small businesses dependent upon the main industries." Commenting on the weather, the captain called it "very un settled because of the contact of the cold ocean currents and winds from the Arctic regions with the Gulf Stream and warm winds from the south." He wrote that Iceland, being Just outside the Arctic Circle, "is one of the lands of the mid night sun." The letter was writ ten April 25, and at that time Captain Sellers wrote that about June 22 "we expect no dark ness at all. It is now 10:30 p. m. and yet hills and valleys ate visible for miles. Darkness comes on very slowly." Captain Sellers has been in the army for the past 12 years and has served in Hawaii, Van couver, Wash., Denver, Detroit and the Panama Canal Zone. eiestef rea vrMiruo UT! n Portland, July 11 P Dep- ..... .4 C.rlnU Uty LHSUIll rtlWIIICJ Uiunvj Hayes said today he had filed a i!cene of an accident against five yUUlilS, . IN POPULARITY Popularity of the playground, sponsored by the Jackson county recreational committee under the sponsorship of the WPA at the Scout headquarters is grow ing weekly according to those in charge of the project. The play- grouna, wnere cnuaren are supervised Mondays, Wednes days and Fridays, has proven ltseu two-fold, by offering com panionship and supervised re creation for children and allow ing patriotic mothers to leave their children under good man- agement while they participate in defense activities or shop wnue in the city. Friday found 65 children at the playground, including three sets of twins, it was reported. Many children enjoyed the fac ilities at the grounds, including a sana Box, swings, toys, a wad' ing pool and others found satis- faction in a nap under the shade trees. Those In charge explained that the civic project has grown to proportions unexpected when the plan was first outlined and many mothers have expressed tneir appreciation for the op portunity of leaving their chil dren in good hands while they give a bit of patriotic service 10 meir country. In many in stances, due to shortac nf lahne it would be impossible for cap- aDie motners to take part in civilian defense or other oatri otic activities, were it not for the services offered in this play ground. Medford women as well as mothers from outlying dis tricts are enjoying the use of the iacuuies. Too Late to Classify FOR RENTFuralshed I room apart ment. Adults. 604 W. 10th.
