SOCIETY and CLUB NEWS of the WEEK BY BETTT SHOEMAKER Former Med ford Resident Weds In Eugene Rites Word has been received here of the marriage June 28 in Eugene of Miss Irene Judy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Judy of Eugene, to Rev. James Webster, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Webster of Buff; lo. N. Y. The ceremony was read in the First Baptist church by the Dr. Vance H. Webster. The Judys re former Medford residents. Given in marriage by her fa ther, the bride wore a white satin sown fashioned with sweet heart neckline, long sleeves and train. She wore a fingertip veil and carried a bouquet of white rosebuds, and gardenias, tied with white satin ribbons. Matron of honor was Mrs, Gordon Brunton of Portland who wore aqua blue marquis ette and carried white asters and Dink sweetpeas. Brides maids were Miss Lucy Crow of Portland and Miss Dorothea Parker of Eugene, who wore yellow marquisette gowns, with yellow flowers in their hair and carried yellow and white flowers. Gordon Brunton of Portland was best man. Attendants for the bridesmaids were Harry Hewitt and Earnest Campbell both of Eugene and ushers were Dale Kingsley, Herbert Gaskil, Leland Chase and Clifford Tra villion. A reception followed in the church parlors during which time several recording solos of Miss Helen Judy, sister of the bride, were played. Miss Lur- lene Wood sang during the wed. ding ceremony accompanied by Robert Gould, who also piayea the wedding marches. The couple left for Buffalo, N. Y., for a short visit with the bridegroom's parents and will make their home in Bie Rock, 11., where Rev. Webster is pas tor of the First Baptist church. Mrs. Webster, Sr., was in Eu gene for the wedding. The bride, well-known In this city, attended Northwest Chris tian college in Eugene; Los An geles Bible Institute and North ern Baptist Seminary in Chi cago. She also worked at the Moody Bible Institute In Chi cago. Rev. Webster is a gradu ate of Wheaton College, Whea ton. 111., and Northern Baptist Seminary in Chicago. The bride visited relatives and friends in southern Oregon just prior to her wedding, Friends Hold Bridal Shower For Miss Wilcox Mrs. Delno R. Sloan and Miss Mary Jean Barnes entertained ot the R. H. Wilcox home on June 24th at a shower for Miss Natalie Wilcox ot Washington, D. C. Over 25 guests attended the affair and presented the absentee honored guest with numerous gifts. Refreshments were served by the two host esses and the evening was spent playing games and cards, open ing the gifts and rewrapping them for express shipment to Washington. The rooms were decorated with mixed pastel flowers and pictures of the guests, gifts and decorations were taken by Fred Wilcox and sent along with the surprise gift shipment. Miss Wilcox, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph H. Wilcox, is employed In the munitions division of the War Department in Washington, D. C, and will wed Donald M. Crooks of that city In September. Mr. Crooks Is now In officers' training at Fort Bcnning, Ga. Local Resident Honorary Pledge According to word received here Mrs. Anne Donelly of this city has been selected to mem bership In Pi Lambda Theta. national women's education hon orary on the University ot Ore gon campus. Mrs. Donelly was among 12 pledges Initiated in the honorary Friday evening She Is English teacher at Med ford high school and la taking graduate work on the Eugene campus. Morris. The ceremony was read in Grants Pass Tuesday at a pri vate service conducted by Supe rior Judge Johnson in his cham bers at the courthouse. Sojourner Club Enjoys Afternoon At Clubhouse Medford Sojourners gathered at the Girls Community club house Thursday afternoon, at which time Mrs. John McCabe, retiring president, and Mrs. Chris Renkcn, Incoming presi dent, were presented corsages. Iowa Residents Are Local Visitors Mr. and Mrs. O. J. Broarhard of Ames, Iowa, were recent visi tors in this city. On a com bined business and pleasure trip through the west they stopped In Medford last week where they were guests of the n. J. Palmers, B. L. Barrys and M. C. Murreys and family. The visitors continued their trip north by way of Crater Lake, plan Mix a short stop In Port land enroute to Iowa. Marine Martha Scott, stage and marines' sweetheart. Service Flag Delicated At Baptist Church A service flag, containing 23 stars, was dedicated at the First Baptist church Friday evening, honoring members of the church who are in the service of their country. At an impressive cere mony conducted by the Rev. W. A. Dawes, 23 mothers pinned stars on the flag in honor of their sons. Devotions were also led by the Rev. Dawes. Entitled a Victory party the entire evening followed a pat riotic theme. The recreation hall was decorated in patriotic colors by a group of young people and a young people's orchestra fur nished patriotic numbers during the evening. A reading was given by Mrs. Marthena Cutlip. Community singing was also en Joyed. In charge of arrangements for the evening and the refresh ments were Mrs. H. E. Herald, Mrs. Daisy Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. George Tucker and Mrs. L. V. Bray. . Annual Picnic At Picket Home Past Noble Grand ciub mem bers of Olive Rebekah lodge en joyed their annual picnic at the Charles Pickel home near Phoe nix Thursday evening. Picnic dinner was served and visiting followed. Guests were Mrs. Clara Bailey of Myrtle Creek, who is visiting her sister, Mrs W. H. Dyer; Mrs. Myrtle New ton and Mrs. Lottie Cave of Medford. Naval reserves at San Diego. . r Noted Musician Resides In City Making their home In this city are Corporal and Mrs. Ben iamin Rolfe. the former sta tioned at Camp White. They have been residing for several days at Hotel Medford and moved Friday evening to Ideal Court. Mrs. Rolfe Is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Moshe Menuhln of Los Gatos, Cal., the parents of the famed Yehudi Menuhin. violinist. Mrs. Rolfe is an out standing musician herself, noted as a pianist and will be a wel come addition to Medford musi cal circles. Among other talents she speaks seven languages. Mrs. Carpenter Attends Meeting Mrs. A. S. V. Carpenter has returned to her home here after attending the national commit tee meeting of volunteer special services of the American Red Cross in Los Angeles. Later the group returned to San Francisco where they saw the activities of the Pacific coast area office. While In Los Angeles she at tended a large luncheon at the Claremont hotel at which 1,000 were present. Arrangements for this gathering were In charge of Mrs. Gardner Bullis, well-known in this city and an active worker In Red Cross acti vity. New Officers Installed By Pocahontas Lodge Pocahontas lodge installed of ficers for the coming term at a meeting Friday evening at Red man hall. During the business meeting it was announced that Pocatontas and the Order of the Redmen had forwarded $956.20 to Washington, D. C, from the Penny-A-P)ane collection, for purchase of airplanes. Victory Fiesta To Be Event At Porter Neff Home Victory Fiesta is the theme of the forthcoming annual enter tainment sponsored by the League of Women Voters In Medford. The affair, which pro mises to be something new in fiestas, will be held the evening of July 28 on the lawn of the Porter J. Neff home. As has been the custom the fiesta will be open to league members and their friends. Mrs. Chauncey Brewer is as sisted in her arrangement of the fiesta by the following, Miss Jean Schuler, Miss Julie Car penter, Miss Alicia Buhl, Miss Dorothy Breck, Mrs. Kenneth Parrott, Mrs. John Day, Miss Patricia Farrell and Miss Nan ette Holmes. Members of the League board who are also working on plans are Mrs. Paul Janney, Mrs. I. E. Schuler, Mrs. Harry Holmes and Mrs. Justin Smith. Two years ago the League sponsored a "Moonlight Aqua cade" at the country home of Mr. and Mrs. A. S. V. Carpenter and last year those attending will recall the colorful South American Fiesta, based on the Good Neighbor policy with the countries to the south of the American republic. Mrs. Justin Smith Appointed Head Of State Group According to word received here yesterday Mrs. Justin of this city has been appointed state chairman of international relations for the American Asso ciation of University Women. The appointment was made by the new state president. Mrs. Frederick Kiehle of Portland. Mrs. Smith has long been ac tive in the field of international relations, and recently returned rrom Portland where she at tended a week's International Relations Institute at Reed col lege. She is a past president of the Medford brance of A.A.U.W.. and has been chairman of an international relations group for the League of Women Voters. R. Buck ob served their golden wedding anniversary Friday with a fam ily reunion and dinner at their home here. Mr. Buck and Miss Edna Parks were married at the latter's home at Buncom with Justice of the Peace Plymale of Jacksonville performing the cer emony. They have resided In the community continuously since their marriage. All of their children were present for the anniversary in cluding Mrs. William Heckman of Modoc Point, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Buck of Merrill, Mr. and Mrs. Vera Buck of Colusa, Cal., and Mr. and Mrs. Otis Buck of Applegate. Robert Heckman was the only one of three grandchildren able to be present. Also attending the dinner were Mrs. Buck's sister and brother. Miss Ella Parks and Hollis Parks of Medford and Max Waugh of San Francisco. Shower Honors Miss Harwood At Young Home Mrs. Regina Young and Mrs. Nola Neilson were co-hostesses for a miscellaneous bridal shower honoring Miss Corrine Harwood at the Young resi dence, 604 King street Thursday evening. Miss Harwood is the bride-elect of Kenton Robbins of Ashland, the wedding to be an event of this month. Attending the affair were Vera Neilson, Alice Hughes, Geraldine Loom is, LaVan Dar nielle, Betty Schrecengost, Dode Harwood, Gladys Robbins. Eldridge and Mrs. Marie Swinson have returned to Medford after spend ing a month in Portland visit ing relatives. Wednesday evening was the "Army Special USO party" during which time prize dances were featured. Miss Edna Shaver and her partner Private Jimmy Root were selected winners In a ser ies of three dances, waltz, fox trot and Jitterbug. Miss Shaver received a corsage and Private Root a telegram anywhere in the United States. Master of ceremonies for the evening was Sergeant Bill Qulgley assisted by Private Wets enbolt. Music was furnished by Dick Meek Dick Abbott and Malcolm Stein. Senior hostesses in attendance were Mrs. John Wilkinsen, Mrs. Helen Conroy, Mrs. Ward Spatz and Mrs. O. A. Eden. A barn dance was featured Friday evening with appropriate decorations forming a setting for square dancing. Old-time dance music was furnished ,by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Skeeters with Sergeant Bill Qulgley and Mrs. Penny Fontaine calling for the old-time dances. Among those enjoyed were quadrille, rye waltz and Virginia reel. Senior hostesses for the eve ning were Mrs. Cole Holmes, Mrs. John Wilkinson and Mrs. C. W. Harwood. State Zonta Officer Honored Miss Hazel Cook, vice presi dent of the Portland Zonta club, was honored Wednesday evening by the Medford club at the studio of Mrs. Effie Kurtz, Med ford club president.
