During the meet ing Mrs. Nettie Cassman of Cen tral Point and Mrs. Clark of North Holly street joined the club. A card of thanks is to be sent to the Past Noble Grand elub of Central Point for sewing done for Navy relief. Gladys Dooms received the prize, a Pearl Harbor pin. in a word scramble puzzle. A. Work gave an interesting book review on Hawaii "Isles of Enchantment" by Clifford Gessler for mem bers of the Wednesday Study club. Time has brought changes in five years since the book war written and Mrs. Work said it was interesting to note the satisfaction with which he wrote of the United States de fense line in Hawaii. The author gave six- condi tions which have affected the islands, Polynesian background. early missionaries, anti-missionaries, traders and sailors, indus tries of sugar and pineapples, racial 'elements and the imper ialistic trend. ' Sandalwood was the island's first export Mrs. Work pointed out and by 1825 the Chinese had exhausted the supply. Then the whale oil industry became the leading export. The arrival of Captain Cook on the islands in 1778 was followed in 1893 by a civil war between those who wished to maintain a mon archy and those who wished to annex with the United States, and in 1898 the annexation was completed. About one-half of the children in the schools are Japanese and the English language is being taught in the schools. Pineap ples were introduced and thrive in abundance. In the neighbor hood of 20,000 tourists visit the islands each year Mrs. Work stated. . Grand Officer To Visit Lodges Mrs. H. Fay Ambrose of Port land, worthy grand matron of the grand chapter of Oregon, O E. S., will be honored with a luncheon Thursday at 1 p. m. at Kyles in Central Point. This precedes her official visit to Reames chapter of Medford and Nevita chapter at Central Point at a district meeting to be held in the Masonic temple in this city Thursday evening at 8 o'clock. Bertha Bonney and Edward Vincent, worthy matron and patron of Nevita chapter will share honors with Ruth Freed and Gorden Kershaw, worthy matron and patron of Reames chapter in presiding in the east. Howard showed pictures of a trip down the Rogue river by boat at the meeting of the ' Business and Professional Women's club at the Girls Community clubhouse Thursday evening. The program followed a pot lurk dinner and several accordior selections were played by Shirley Schoettler and Helen McBeth. Attending from Grants Pass were Marie Wilcox, Irene Rin guette and Claudia Lowd. Guests from this city included Olivia Claypool, Miss Marian Burton, Eloise Winklebleck, Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Gifford. Mrs. Mark wart Is Club Hostess W T. H. club members were entertained Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Ralph Markwart, 1023 Queen Anne avenue. Mrs. Fred Rehling was a guest. Pan- sies were used for decoration. Attending were Mesdames Har old Aberle,' William Cushman C. H. Childreth acting as hostesses with Mrs. Marian Beeson pre siding at the tea table. County P-TA Mrs. F. W. Blum, Oregon P.- T.A. president, and Mrs. J. K. Sayre, state membership chair man, will attend the meeting of Jackson county council of par ents and teachers Tuesday at Central Point Grange hall. Mrs. Blum will lead a panel discus sion on Emergency Youth Pro tection which will be the main feature of the afternoon's pro gram. Participating in the discussion will be Judge Coleman, speak ing on "Delinquency in Jackson County;" Theo. J. Norby, "Soc ial Behavior; Leonard May- field, "Discipline Through Ath letics;" Dr. A. E. Merkel, "Ven eral Diseases;" and Clyde Ficht- ner, 'The Need of a Full Time Juvenile Officer." Some of Cap tain Cox s experiences with lo cal youth will also be given. Mrs. Blum will open the pro gram, which will start prompt ly at 1 o'clock, with a short talk on teachers' salaries, short ening the school year, and drafting of school children. During the morning session. which starts at 10 o'clock, Mrs. Sayre will address the council suggesting ways in which the state membership of nearly 30,- 000 parents and teachers can most effectively take its place in a constructive war effort. The county chairman will give brief reports on their work dur- Ung the year and all local units will summarize their activities. Special emphasis has been placed on summer round up and now the P.-T.A.s realize that efforts to have all pre school children immunized against communicable diseases must be redoubled. Lunch will be served prompt ly at 12 noon by Central Point unit. During the noon hour the grade school girls' chorus will entertain, and upper grade boys will give a model aeroplane demonstration.
