The United China Relief drive epeni In this city Monday (or the week March 22 to March 28. House to house and business firm solicitation will begin the tint of the week in an effort to raise $1,300 in Jackson county for the relief of the United States' ally in Its struggle for freedom and democracy. The county drive is being sponsored by the Medford Minis terial association and is headed in Medford by Rev. R. W. Cole man and in outlying districts by Mrs. Margaret Fabrick. Actual details of the drive are awaiting the arrival of Dr. Erma Gordon of Portland, who has been a resident of China and has been assisting in the publicity in Ore gon. An experienced social worker, recently returned from China, says, "I don't think there has ever been any place in the world where even a little money could do the amazing amount of good it can do in China today." Funds will be used for medi cal aid, hospitalization, food, clothing and shelter, student aid and training, care of children and Industrial rehabilitation. BRINGS $40 FINE FOR ROY L HALE Roy Louts Hale, charged with reckless driving, was fined $40 and costs in justice coure yester day. Pending payment of the fine and costs, commitment to the county jail was suspended by the court. It was one of the highest fines ever assessed In justice court for a traffic vio lation. Hale, it was brought out, was "weaving all over" the Pacific highway while driving a car with six persons in it, in consid erable traffic. P) Spring registration at the Uni versity of Oregon was in its second day today, with yester day's total 21 percent under that of the opening day a year ago. The 2148 enrolled yesterday compared with 2730 last year and 2554 the first day of the 1942 winter term. Corvallls. March 20. It was the second appearance of Wagner and Stauffer on the same charge. William E. Jackson, canton ment truck driver, charged with speeding a truck on the Midway Road was fined $5 and costs. Mildred Louise Watson was fined $1 and costs on two charges of having no operator's license, and having no talllight. FIRE SCARCITY IS BOON TO PETS Portland, -March 20. JP) The Oregon Humane society noted with satisfaction today that the tire scarcity was sav ing, the lives of approximately 110 dogs and 100 cats per month in Portland. Harry Daniel, society presi dent, said 188 pups and 180 felines had gone to their glory under the wheels of automobiles during January. However, as tires become more valuable and speeds lowered In February the animal kingdom lost only 73 dogs and 78 cats. HERO'S SISTER-IN-LAW CHRISTENS DESTROYER Kearny, N. J., March 20. (JPh-Mrs. Arthur MacArthur, a sister-in-law of the hero of the Philippines, christened today the U. S. S. McCalla, one of the two destroyers sent down the ways In a twin ceremony at the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock company yards. The McCalla was preceded into the waters of the Hacken sack river by the U.S.S. Lard ner. The ships were launched 20 minutes apart. Watch factories in Switzer land are curtailing operations because of the war's adverse affect on business, according to the department of commerce. K.F. Klamath Falls, March 20. UP) T wo Klamath county brothers are missing and pre sumed lost as a result of naval action in the south Pacific, it was learned here today. The navy department last Saturday notified Mr. and Mrs. Richard Thew of Langell valley that their son, Henry, stationed aboard the cruiser Houston, was reported missing after the sink ing of the Houston oft Java February 27. Wednesday, a navy com munique announced that the submarine Shark had been over due 30 days and was presumed lost. Richard Thew, brother of Henry, was member of the Shark's crew. ARRESTED BY F.B.I. Portland. March 50 . Three Germans and one Italian were arrested In Oreson ven. terday as the FBI continued its raids on enemy aliens. Howard Kins, mer-lal FBI agent, said a German arrested here possessed two rifles, a shotgun and two cameras. Unfriendly remarks about the United States led to the arrest of a German at Milwaukie, a German near Tillamook and an Italian here. King said. Jellyfish Carpet Beach at Seaside Seaside, Ore., March 20. (JP) A carpet of decaying jelly fish, miles long and as much as 100 yards wide, edged the Sea side beach today, swept in by yesterday's tides. They are the sail Jellyfish, or Blue Medusa, species.
