Turning, she started towards her own room. In the next in stant Dennis was behind her. his arms around her. his hug pulling her off her feet "I know you were. el." he said, and kissed her soundly. Sharon saw that his dark eyes still smouldered despit- his pre tense of gaiety. And of course, to night of all nights that he needed her company, ahe'd have to re fuse. "I'm sorry, dear. Tm not learning anything except that it's impossible to make you see straight through your preju dices. Why all the secrecy Dennis' calls didn't usually involve anything more mysterious than a movie with one of his pals Although lately he'd grown away from his little-boy frankness and enthusiasms into a new. hard -shelled cynicism. She still never knew when to believe this new version or when to ex pect the old. impulsive, lovable boy to return. Surelv it was only a phase of his growing up He needed hu mother and father to help with his adjustment to an indifferent world. She forgot Dennis for a mo ment when she met herself in her new dress in the full length mir ror. Even Dennis had often told her she was pretty as a dream in blue And the full-pleated skirt the soft, sculptured bodice gave grace to her every movement. And thank fortune for the grey caracul cape heritage from her mother and remodelled to make an evening wrap. Her gloves, her headed evening bag, another heirloom, and she waa readv.
