To Seattle Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lawrence, 1422 Euclid avenue, received a telephone call from Klamath Falls last evenina from their son Harry, who is in the navy air corps. Lawrence was en route to Seattle where he will be In the gunner's ordnance department. He has been sta tioned at Terminal Island, Long Beach, Cal. Completes Studies Miss Hel en Chirgwin, who Is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H, S. Ch(rgwin. at their home on Jacksonville Star route, plans to return to Salem at the end of the week to enter the employ ment of the city library. Miss Chirgwin, who arrived home last Saturday for a week's visit, has completed her course of studies at Willamette university, Salem. Pack In Army John Apple gate, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank L. Applegate of 615 South Oak dale avenue, is back in the army at Governor's Island, New York, employed in the same office of the medical department he was In when he completed his first enlistment of one year and came home. John, a sergeant who hopes to become a staff sergeant soon, headed back to New York to enlist for. duration the day war was declared. En route he stopped to see his brother Dick, with the United Press in Los Angeles. John returned to his old job at Governor's Island December 27. In his latest letter to his parents, received yester day. John said everything was fine and he was looking forward to some excitement. PERSONAL Towntend Meeting Townsend club No. 4 will huld a regular meeting Friday in Townsend nail, 1234 West Main street, at 8 p. m. Guest speaker will be Klmer J. Whipple, who, besides being an authorized speaker on the Townsend plan, is reported to be a magician and will en tertain after his talk. A social hour and old-time dance, also are planned. Reece. connected with the Klamath Falls branch of Swift and Com pany for the past 12 ears, today assumed the managership of the Medford branch of the wholesale meat-packing concern. Frank C. Crouch, former man ager who has been continuously employed by the company here for the past 41 years, will re main with the company and work this territory. Mr. and Mrs. Reece and their son have taken a house in Medford Job Tests The U. S. civil service commission today an nounced open competitive ex aminations for the job of light duty truck driver, for employ ment in Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Washington, and tile and plate setter for employment at the Puget Sound navy yard, Bremerton, Wash. Closing date (or filing application for the truck-driving Job is February 11 ft Scal-.rj. Applications for tile and plate setter will be received until further notice. INHERITANCES PAY Salem, Feb. 3. UP) Inherit ance and gift tax collections during 1941 set an all-time rec ord of $1,669,943, compared with $698,269 in 1940. State Treasurer Leslie M. Scott said today. Inheritance tax collec tions last year were $1,471,643, the largest tax, $874,000, being paid by the E. S. Collins estate of Portland. Gift tax collections were $198,299. LULA L ROE PASSES AGED 90 Mrs. Lula E. Roe, aged BO. paued away early this morning at the home of her daughter. Mrs. F. E. Wahl, where she has made her home since coming here from Boise, Idaho, in May, 1923. She had been ill for about six weeks. Lula E. Christy was born in Hillsboro, Ky.. Dec. 13, 1851. At the age of 18, she moved with her parents to Missouri, where she married William M. Roe on May 17, 1874. To this union were born four children, one of whom, Mrs. Wahl, sur vives. Her husband was a min ister of the Christian church and she worked with him faith fully until his death In 1916. Mrs. Roe was of a kindly dis position and loved by all who knew her. Funeral services will be con ducted in the Conger chapel by the Rev. R. W. Coleman at 2 p. m. Thursday. Interment will follow in Siskiyou memorial park. FLYING SCHOOL MAY BE MOVED Portland, Feb. 3. (J") Port land flying schools announced plans today to move from the coastal area, where private fly ing is banned. Two of the operators said they would locate at Madras, and another at Ontario. Instructor Don Faber of Al bany college said his school's civilian pilot training program would be carried on at Ontario. Thomas A. Culbertson, Jr.. flight instructor of the govern ment's civilian pilot training program at Medford municipal airport, today quoted Marshall E. Woodell, registrar of the Southern Oregon College of Education In Ashland and in charge of the program for the college, as saying that he would immediately look into the pos sibilities of continuing the pilot training plan somewhere else, possibly Klamath Falls. It was said that steps have been taken to place Klamath Falls outside the area closed to private fly ing.
