EARLIER CLOSING NOT PLANNED FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS Later Opening In Fall Would Be Ordered If Work In Harvest Found Necessary E. H. Hedrlck, city ichool nip erintendent, said today that at present no pltrn had been made to inaugurate the speed-up plan here in order to permit the earlier closing of schools in the spring or the later opening In the fall to help with the fruit and vegetable harvest, but added that if such a need develops the Medford schools will meet It at once. C. R. Bowman, county school superintendent, stiSd that all school districts in the state had : been asked by the state board of education to investigate ineir own local produce and labor situations and to consider tne plan if necessary. "Some Jackson county achool listrictj have seasonal work problems and others haven't, and I can't say at this time which of them might possibly employ the plan," Mr. Bowman said. Both Bowman and Hedrick explained that a state law made it illegal to hold school on Sat urdays and other designated holidays, but that the schools could cooperate in the harvest. if needed, by adding an hour a day to the regular five-day week r.nd eliminating or cutting down on vacation periods such as Christmas and Easter. Portland. Ore.. Feb. 2. (Fh- Scattered Oregon schools went on a six-day week today in an attempt to forestall a critical labor shortage threatening the largest harvest In the history of this food-producing state. In Stayton, where youths will work in Willamette valley fields of string beans, and in Moun tainous Wallowa county, where students will be needed to herd cattle, schools adopted the speed up plan, permitting them to close a month earlier than usual Farmers, spurred by depart ment of agriculture pleadings, are increasing production of some crops 25 per cent. Total production is expected to exceed even last year's bumper yield.
