PAGE ETGHT MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD. OREGON, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1941. by Phoebe Atwood Taylor Chapter It The Doctor Come fY dear man," Bankin an i'l iwered, "it's got nothing to do with their getting along with each other. They limply don't know each other. They moved in different spheres, that' all. Ai far as their interests and lives and friends and activities are con' cerned, they live In two different woriosr To Asev. who had seen both women, Rankin's statement seemed reasonable enough, but Hanson shook his head. "Aim niiM, that tuA Mmni living in the same place wouldn't have anything to do with each other! Mrs. Hingham must have heard a shot, anywayl Was she the only one here, Asey7 "Except for the Doane girl and her father," Asey said. "Mrs. Doane says she vas at the gas station you mignt cnecic up on that, an' if she was around all the time the lights was out" "I'll tell one of the boys to drop around there when I call back to the barracks," Hanson said. "Asey, I can't excuse Mrs. Doane's moving this body because she was afraid her Inn business'd be ruined if its name got mixed up with a killing. Why, there was a murder at an inn in Pochet a coup'e of years ago, and offthand. I can't remember the name of the place. I don't believe anyont re members it. I can't " "I think I hear Cummlng's car," Asey said. "Wait I'll go see." When he reached the porte cochere, the short, stocky figure of Dr. Cummings was already bustling up the front steps. "Hi, Doc," Asey said. "Come around this way." "Hello." Cummings said. "Why does it always happen like this, I wonder? You go away, and life is peaceful and restful and re laxed, and then you come back, and it hails, and there's murder. Dropped some weight rushing around with Bill, haven't you? Asey, what's the matter with your Cousin Jennie? She said Olive Beadle had been shot!" "She has," Asey told him. "Then there must be two Olive Beadles," Cummings said with finality. "The one I know is a schoolteacher. Been here for Eears. They call her the perennial oarder. She's due in my office tomorrow afternoon for her an nual shot of poison-ivy vaccine. Wears steel-rimmed glasses. You don't mean her. You can't mean her. What's this Olive Beadle of yours look like?" "It's the same one," Asey as sured him. "She's around back here, under a Boston rocker on the porch. She's been shot in the back." "Now I know you're wrong!" Cummings said. I tell you, I know Miss Olive, Asey, and she's not the sort to get murdered. No one would shoot her. Not In the bark, anywayl I think some body's slipped up on your Identi fication here hello. Hanson. Hel lo, Mr. Rankin. Got over those bilious attacks last fall all right, did you? Where's the body?" Hanson displayed it to him. Cummings set 1own his inevit able little black bag, put his hands en his hips, and started In honest amazement. "By Georgel" he said. "It's Miss Olive, all rightl Humpf. I'm so dumfounded, I'm utterly speech less. Never in my life was I more dumfounded than I am at this very moment Why" Surprise ' ASEY interrupted his monologue several minutes lster with the suggestion that he stop being speechless and get to work. "There's some things we'd sort of like to find out about Doe. Where d'you want us to move the body, Inside?" Cummings nodded. "Ordinarily, I'd say wait for the ambulance. But I liked Miss Olive, and I don't like to see her out here like this. Olive Beadle! Of all the people in this world to be shot in the back I Miss Olive!" A few minutes later, Hanson was protesting the doctor's choice of a room. This looks like somebody's bedroom, Doc. You think you oueht to use it?" It's the only bedroom I can find," Cummings returned." Never aaw such a olace! Regular rabbit warren. Halls, halls, halls! Unless you want to stand and hold her, put her In here, and then go find Mrs. Doane and warn her I'm using this room why Isn't she around? Where is everyone? I thought you said Jennie was here. Asey. wneres she? Asey shook his head. "Marvelous organizers, you and Hanson!" Cummings said. "Called Carey yet? Hanson, haven't you even called Carey? Well, go call mm, man go rail him! " "I was going to call him." Han son said, "when I phoned for the ooys 10 come, uoc. "Haven't you got anyone here yet? What in the world have you people been doing! Where's my hag? Don't let's dally any longer! Rankin, get my bag from the porch, will you?" "I brought It In," Rankin pointed. "Well, then, why don't all of you get out and stop getting in my way!" Cummings said. "Close the door behind you!" "Peppery tonight Isn't he?" Rankin said as he and Asey started up the hall toward the living room. "He feels bad about this," Asey said. "I don't know as I ever seen him quite so indignant Huh, I wonder what become of Jennie? An' Where's that irl Freddy, that was bein' sent out to tell mc things so long ago? I" "Aseyl" Cummings stuck his head out of the bedroom door. "Asey come here. I want you!" Grabbing Asey by the arm, he pulled him into the bedroom and closed the door, "What's the matter, Doc?" "You should ask me that! What's the matter with you? What's going on here? What's the big idea?" Asey looked at him In be wilderment. "What you mean, Doc?" 'That woman!" Cummings said. "Look at her! That Isn't Miss Olive any more than you are!" The Gray Wig T ISTEN, Doc." Asey said gently, - "the one thing there don't seem to be any difference of opin ion on is that una 8 Miss Ulive Beadle, I know you wish it wasn't, but you Identified hei yourself. So's Mrs. Doane. So's Rankin." "I don't care," Cummings re torted, "if she's been identified by the F.B.I., and the President and the Senate, one by onel I tell you, it's not Miss Olivel" "But you said, out on the porch, that It was!" "Yes, yes, and what If I did? That was when I saw her in the light of Hanson's flashlight was that the only time you saw her, out there, Asey?" nope, 1 seen her inside, in -"In the full glare of lights?" "Nodo. she was in the ohons booth, an' there was only candle. But1, 'Well, that explains it. then. I wish," Cummings said, "that ou'd do what I say, and look at er. Aseyl I didn't suspect any thing when just the side lamo was on here, but the minute I put on the overhead lights, It was as plain as day. Look oh. stop staring at me, and look at her! That's not hair on her head, that's a gray wig! Look at that make-upf This isn't Miss Olive, Asey, it someone made up to look like her!" Asev leaned over the figure on the bed. Golly, Doe, It Is a wig!" 'It is. Very professional lob. too, if you ask me. So's the pad ding see how she's padded out? That's Miss Olive's coat, all right, and her clothes. She always wears the same sort of plain, tailored things. But it isn't Miss Olive!" Who n time. Asev said, "do you think it is, Doc?" cummings shrugged. "I haven't the remotest Idea But I can very shortly show you what she looks like. I can tell you one thing right now. She isn't nair miss Ulive s sge. Look at the back of her hands. I doubt if she's a third Miss Olive's age. She's just a kid. Humnfl Whyn'l you mosey around and see if any young girls are mising, Asey, while I look Into this. I ll call vou when I'm ready." Asey paused on his way to tht door. Couldn t be rreddy Doane, could it Doc?" Never," (Jummlnes said. "II would take more than make-up to blot out Freddy's freckles. Besides, this girl's gray-eyed, and I think she's blonde. Freddy's blue-eyed and dark, and weight about fifteen pounds more." "I didn't know you was so In timate with the Doanes," Aae) commented. 1 m not. I just haDDened to know Freddy because I treated her for a nasty burn she got about a month ago. I've been doing i lot of business over here in Quis. set since old Dr. Martin died. Be fore you o. Asev. mavbe vou better tell me what's been goin on tonight Jennie tried to, ovei the phone, but 1 couldn t maks head nor tail of what she said." Asev drew a lone breath, and for the second time in half an hour gave his concise summer) of what had taken place since hi ana Jennie set out to deliver Syl I clams. "There you are," he concluded "We found the body. I took timt out to chase somebody, lost him run into Washy Doane. I comi back, the body's there, an' a few minutes later it ain't An' whilt I track dowo a Persian mg an a dead goat Jennie finds it. An' now we got it it ain't who ws thought" "Mrs. Doane," Cummings said, "need never worry about her inn getting bad publicity. Any re porter who turned in a yarn like that would be fired. I never heard such a fantastic yarn don't turn your head for a moment Asey, please. Keep on looking at me, and say something. Anything." "Now is the time," Asey said obediently, "for all good men to come to the aid of the party. What's the matter?" "I'm trying to figure out" Cum. mings said, "if what I see In the mirror is a hush moving outside, or a face looking in." Te be eentineed Physiographic Map Ready For Oregon Portland, Dec. 9.
