women, Rankin's statement
seemed reasonable enough, but
Hanson shook his head.

"Except for the Doane girl and
her father," Asey said. "Mrs.

"I'll tell one of the boys to drop

"Asey, I can't excuse Mrs. Doane's
moving this body because she

"I think I hear Cummlng's
car," Asey said. "Wait I'll go

When he reached the porte
cochere, the short, stocky figure
of Dr. Cummings was already
bustling up the front steps.
"Hi, Doc," Asey said. "Come
around this way."
"Hello." Cummings said. "Why
does it always happen like this,
I wonder? You go away, and life
is peaceful and restful and re
laxed, and then you come back,
and it hails, and there's murder.
Dropped some weight rushing
around with Bill, haven't you?
Asey, what's the matter with
your Cousin Jennie? She said
Olive Beadle had been shot!"
"She has," Asey told him.
"Then there must be two Olive
Beadles," Cummings said with
finality. "The one I know is a
schoolteacher. Been here for
Eears. They call her the perennial
oarder. She's due in my office
tomorrow afternoon for her an
nual shot of poison-ivy vaccine.
Wears steel-rimmed glasses. You
don't mean her. You can't mean
her. What's this Olive Beadle of
yours look like?"
"It's the same one," Asey as
sured him. "She's around back
here, under a Boston rocker on
the porch. She's been shot in the
back."
"Now I know you're wrong!"
Cummings said. I tell you, I
know Miss Olive, Asey, and she's
not the sort to get murdered. No
one would shoot her. Not In the
bark, anywayl I think some
body's slipped up on your Identi
fication here hello. Hanson. Hel
lo, Mr. Rankin. Got over those
bilious attacks last fall all right,
did you? Where's the body?"
Hanson displayed it to him.
Cummings set 1own his inevit
able little black bag, put his hands

amazement.

Olive, all rightl Humpf. I'm so
dumfounded, I'm utterly speech
less. Never in my life was I more
dumfounded than I am at this

ASEY interrupted his monologue
several minutes lster with the
suggestion that he stop being
speechless and get to work.
"There's some things we'd sort
of like to find out about Doe.
Where d'you want us to move the
body, Inside?"
Cummings nodded.
"Ordinarily, I'd say wait for the
ambulance. But I liked Miss
Olive, and I don't like to see her
out here like this. Olive Beadle!
Of all the people in this world
to be shot in the back I Miss
Olive!"
A few minutes later, Hanson
was protesting the doctor's choice
of a room.
This looks like somebody's
bedroom, Doc. You think you

Hanson!" Cummings said. "Called

son said, "when I phoned for the

pointed.
"Well, then, why don't all of
you get out and stop getting in
my way!" Cummings said. "Close
the door behind you!"
"Peppery tonight Isn't he?"
Rankin said as he and Asey
started up the hall toward the
living room.
"He feels bad about this," Asey
said. "I don't know as I ever seen
him quite so indignant Huh, I
wonder what become of Jennie?
An' Where's that irl Freddy, that
was bein' sent out to tell mc
things so long ago? I"
"Aseyl" Cummings stuck his
head out of the bedroom door.
"Asey come here. I want you!"
Grabbing Asey by the arm, he
pulled him into the bedroom and
closed the door,
"What's the matter, Doc?"
"You should ask me that!
What's the matter with you?
What's going on here? What's the
big idea?"
Asey looked at him In be
wilderment. "What you mean,
Doc?"
'That woman!" Cummings said.
"Look at her! That Isn't Miss
Olive any more than you are!"

That was when I saw her in the
light of Hanson's flashlight was
that the only time you saw her,

and her clothes. She always wears
the same sort of plain, tailored
things. But it isn't Miss Olive!"

cummings shrugged.
"I haven't the remotest Idea
But I can very shortly show you
what she looks like. I can tell you
one thing right now. She isn't

back of her hands. I doubt if
she's a third Miss Olive's age.
She's just a kid. Humnfl Whyn'l

young girls are mising, Asey,

blue-eyed and dark, and weight

Bond Buying Urged
At Aid in Defense
Portland, Dec. 9. (JPi Pur
chase of defense savings bonds
was urged today by Palmer
Hoyt, state chairman, as a
means by which Oregon resi
dents can take an active part
in the war.
"All of our war efforts de
pend on successful financing of
the various military programs,"
Hoyt said. "Purchase of these
bonds, which may be obtained
for as little as $18.75 for the
$25 ten-year bond, now becomes
the first duty of every citizen."
Of the annual production of house
hold washing machines 1.500.000
more than 1.350.000 are electrlo ma
chines, and over 100,000 are gaso-line-engine
driven.

Photography was only 20 years old when W. H. Jackson, now in his nineties, started
taking pictures, and he has been taking them ever since! He now ranks as the oldest and
most distinguished lensman In the world. He la also a painter of note and has done some
fine murals. He has several mountains and canyons named for him, and he was Instrumental
in having the government take over the Yellowstone district and make it a national park.
Some of the photographs he made on wet plates 50 or more years ago are still popular!
