Here are the dozen: MEDFORD-GRANTS PASS Prof. Pickem will make him if highly unpopular with the Medford high coaching staff by predicting the Black Tornado will win ita first conference game by anywhere from five to umpty-umph touchdowns. The Cavemen Just won't have what it takes to stop the locals. Let's call it a duplication of the Corvallia scorei 41 to 0. KLAMATH FALLS - DUNS MUIR. The California club lost by only a 6 to 7 count to Chlco, which was beaten by the Peli cans, IB to 13. It looks like a Klamath victory by 20 to 0. ASHLAND COQUILLE. The Grizzlies, with apparently one of their best teams In years, will travel to Coqullle and hang up a 14 to 0 onquest. OREGON - IDAHO. Francis Schmidt will find to his disgust that the Coast conference Is about as tough aa the Big Ten. The WebfooU to do It by 33 to 0. OREGON STATE WASH INGTON. The upsetl Are yeu lookin', folks? W.S.C. The game is at Pullman, which will help the Cougars, but Cal ap pears to have too much power. 21 to 7, favor the Bears. STANFOKD-U.CX.A. Driving for another Rose Bowl engage ment, the T-formation Indians will hurdle the Bruins by 20 to 8. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA OHIO STATE. This looks like a tossup in almost every respect, but because the game Is in L. A. Professor Pickem will take El Trojan by 14 to 13. DUKE-TENNESSEE. JT The waning Pacific Coast league bateball season opens Its final bid for attention tonight with a "revenge series" for the fi nale. Sarramento. the team that led the league by a wide margin through moM of the 841 season, will clash with Seattle, the three-time champion who came from behind to snatch the flag, In the President's cup play off. While the Sacs are seeking to avenge Seattle's theft of the pennant, the Rainiers have an account of their own to square They have smarted under the Sacs' IS victories In 24 games with the Rainiers. Hal Turpin will start on the mound for Seattle, with Tony Freitas expected to pitch for Sacramento in a duel of veterans. Seven "B" Schools Stage SQUADS DIVIDED TWO GROUPS Each Team Will Play Two Six-Minute Quarters Four Games On Schedule Seven Jackson county class B six-man football teams, includ ing the 1S40 state champion Jacksonville Redskins, will stage their annual grid jamboree at the Medford senior high school stadium tonight at 8 o'clock sharp. The teams have been divided into two groups, the West and the East. Playing for the West will be Eagle Point, Gold Hill. Rogue River and Prospect, and for the West, Phoenix, Talent and two Jacksonville sextettes. West teams will be pitted against East outfits in four games to consist of two six minute quarters, with the cumu lative score determining victory for one of the two groups. The order of games follows: Eagle Point vs. Phoenix. Gold Hill vs. Jacksonville. Rogue River vs. Jacksonville. Prospect vs. Talent. Stephen Epler of Southern Oregon College of Education, inventor of six-man football, will be one of the officials, and an added feature will be the performance of Talent, Phoenix and Jacksonville drill teams between halves. PORTLAND 26-0 Portland, Oct. 3. UP) It was all Willamette university In the opening and closing minutes of the football game against Port land university at Multnomah stadium here last night and the Bearcats walked away with a 28 to 0 decision. Throughout much of the sec ond quarter and all of the third the teams played on even terms. But a six-minute burst by Willamette in the opening per iod sealed the Pilots' doom. Al Walden streaked through the center of the line on the second Bearcat play for 30 yards to the Portland two from where he scored. Soon after that Gene Stewart Intercepted a Portland pass on his own 33 and behind good blocking moved all the way to pay dirt. Jim Fitzgerald converted on the first score and Bill Reder on the second. BATTLE ASHLAND TO 6-6 DEADLOCK Outplayed throughout the first half by a bigger Ashland junior high eleven, the Med ford juniors came back in the third period to score a touch down on a pass from Bob Wat son to Earl Barnhart and earn a 8 to 8 deadlock In the open ing Southern Oregon junior high conference football game at Ashland last night. Medford's scoring play was a 12-yard shot from left halfback Watson to right halfback Barn hart, who scampered 12 more yards Into the end zone. The locals failed to add the extra point when Stead, quarterback, dropped a pass over the goal line. Ashland scored in the first period and led at halftime, 6 to 0. Clarence Marquess, former Medford boy now attending the Ashland school, tore off a 20- yard end run from his fullback position for the home team's touchdown, but a running play failed to add the extra point. Marquess, a powerful runner, was the outstanding back on the field. It was not until the third period that the Bulldogs started rolling. TORNADO LINEUP IS REVAMPED FOR M e d f o r d's Black Tornado, with a slightly revamped start ing lineup made necessary by injuries to a pair of regulars, travels to Grants Pass tonight to open defense of its Southern Oregon conference champion ship. The game starts at 8:00 o'clock sharp. With right halfback Ike Orr on the sidelines with a Charley horse and left tackle Bud May- field suffering from a head in jury, Coach Bill Bowerman has shifted big Bill Wall from right end to Mayfield's tackle berth, placed Lee Reynolds at Wall's flank post and inserted Steve Dippel, sensational sophomore, into the backfield at Orr's spot. Another change will find Jimmy Glenn starting at full back and Wesley Davis opening at Glenn's right guard position. Cliff Jones, regular fullback, missed two days of important practice this week while visit ing his sick father in Yreka. Cal., but will probably get Into the battle before the night is over. Orr and Mayfield also will probably see some action. The remainder of the Tor nado lineup will be the same. with Stan Wirtter at center, Bob Mitchell at left guard. Stan Smith at right tackle, Curt Hop- Kins at left end. Bob Stead at quarter, and Cato Wray at left half. The Cavemen, distinct under dogs to the roaring Black Tor nado, will probably line up with Spaulding and Edwards at the ends, Skow and Bigelow at the tackles, Gardner and Parks at the guards. Farthing at center, Prosser at quaterback, Pruess and Jerke at the halfbacks and Allison at fullback. Sox, Cubs to Resume City Series Tonight Chicago, Oct. 3. lP) The Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs will resume their battie tor the city baseball champion ship tonight under the Comiskey park lights, home of the Amer ican leaguers. Two southpaws, Verne Olsen, Cubs, and Ed Smith, Sox, will oppose each other on the mound, according to pre-game announcements. . Yesterday's game was rained out after three scoreless innings. Duke uncorked plenty of scoring punch against Wake Forest. Tennessee s strength still is problematical but the Vols have at least one extremely dangerous back in Johnny But ler. Southern Califomio-Ohio State: The Trojans may not be a major factor in the coast con ference race this season but that seems to go doubled in spades for Ohio State in the Western conference. Taking the home club, Southern California. Fordham-Southern Methodist: The Mustangs and Rams and the only thing sure is that this should be one of the day's best ball games. We'll take Fordham. Indiana-Notre Dame: Bo Mc Millin has a great running back in Billy Hillenband but this corner can't see Indiana upset ting the Notre Dame applecart. The Irish seem to have the greater versatility and the greater all-around strength. Notre Dame. Louisiana State-Texas: Until events prove it is a mistake, the secretary is empowered to cast one steady ballot for Texas. West Virginia-Navy: Spot for a surprise, for West Virginia Is loaded. A wavering vote for Navy. Purdue-Pitt: Tough choice. Figuring the Panthers are bound to win somewhere along their stiff schedule and this may be it, Pitt. U.C.L.A.-Stanford: A fat vote for Stanford's defending cham pions. Harvard-Penn: What to do? It usually is a mistake to expect a Harlow-coached team to win in October. If It be a mistake, then make the most of this vote for Harvard, Virginia-Yale: Spike Nelson's debut at Yale may be spoiled by Bill Dudley and the Cava liers. Timidly, Virginia.
