Newspaper Page TextMEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY. OCTOBER 8. 1941 PAGE NINE JOSEPH H. STELLE PASSES AGED 87 Joseph H. Stelle. 87, passed away at the home of his son, Chas. E. Stelle at S2S Pearl street at 8:30 a. m. today. Mr. Stelle was born at Dal green, M, Sept. 10, 1854. He has resided in Oregon practically all the time since 1914 and in Jackson county for the last five years, during which time he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. William Pierce, at Eagle Point. He came to Medford yesterday to be with his son here. His wife passed way at Eagle Point in 1922. Five children survive, Mrs. James Hannaford and Mrs. Wm Pierce of Eagle Point; Julia CoghiU, J. Frank Stelle and Chas. E. Stelle of Medford; also 25 grandchildren and a num ber of great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be con- . ducted by the Kev. R. w. cole- man at the Conger chapel at 3 p. m. Monday. Interment in the Central Point cemetery. AT MIGRANT C. K. Mr. Collier, who has been clerk of the camp at Independ ence, will be known officially as acting manager here. He ar rived late yesterday afternoon. ' ill i ICE ANTICS By Sparky Bourejue (This is another la the series of Friday articles by Sparky Bourque, manager and profes sional instructor of the Medford Ice Arena now under construc tion, dealing with all phases of plain and fancy Ice skating). Dancing on ice is one of the most delightful forms of exer eise and fun. It is the simplest form of pair skating and always seems to give great pleasure to the skaters as well as the on looking public. The waltz, one of the most beautirul rhythms erf all the times, has given great Inspiration to the art of skating and many varieties of dances follow this rhythm. The waltz combines the most elementary-school figures. They are the forward outside edge, the back outside edge and the forward outside three. So long as the waltz is written 1-2-3 time there can be nothing , nvnt th ekatpr countinff 1-2-3 and by so doing assure his figures being executed In proper time. Even the musical I skater will find it helpful to do a little counting, especially if his partner is not familiar with his skating. In waltzing on Ice there are two bars of music to each fig ure, making six counts in all. It is necessary to count 1-2-3-4-5-6 instead of 1-2-3. Let us take, for instance, the right outside forward edge of the gentleman. With the beginning edge, the skating knee is well bent and the balance leg is well back on the count of one and the posi tion held for two more counts. There is 1-2-3 for the first part oi me zigure. un ine count oi four the balance leg is started forward and at, but not before. the balance leg reaches the em ployed foot the skater makes a three turn. This is held for two more beats, when the dance starts over again. While the balance leg is going forward the skat ing is gradually straightening, giving the figure an air cf ease and grace, that Is not only very pleasing but helpful in retain ing the balance. Inasmuch as the lady is doing a back edge at the time the importance of count and gradual swing for ward of the balance leg and straightening of the skating knee is easily seen. At the count of one the lady has her skating knee bent and her balance leg forward. She too holds that position to three counts and starts the balance leg backwards at the count of four in unision with the for ward swinging of the gentle man's balance leg. It is import ant that both skaters swing the free legs forward and backward in unison and the straightening of the knees must be done grad ually and to the count. When the waltz Is perfected it Is the most beautiful of all ice dances. HOPS CO HIGHER Portland, Oct. 3. Regular seeded clust ers of the 1941 crop reached a top of 38 cents a pound net to growers.
