Br Frank Jtnklns rmay be that in these days vou think of vour senator or your congressman as a politi cian, intent only upon getting at the next election more votes than anybody else can get and so being returned to his very desirable $10,000 a year job in Washington. TJ an extent, of course, you will be right in so thinking. It IS a very desirable Job. Much honor goes with it. At the present moment in history, i Washington is the center of the world. Whole nations rise or fall, realize or fail to realize their aspirations, practically live i or perish, according to the de cisions that are made here. In our own United States of America, communities thrive or languish according to these " same decisions. Washington is a fascinating city to live in. It is ten times MORE FASCINATING to live in Washington and FLAY A PART in the decisions that are being made here every day. It is little wonder that sena tors and congressmen want to come back. pROCERYMEN live by selling ''groceries. Dry goods men live by selling drygoods. Senators and congressmen live by SELL ING THEMSELVES and their merits to their constituents. . That is why they are politi cians. They have to be or lose their jobs. DUT if you think of your sena- tors and your congressmen only as politicians, you are miss ing a very Important point. They are also your business represen tatives in Washington. And Washington is the COUN TY SEAT of the United States of America. Almost every community has business of importance in Wash ington these days. Very, very many citizens indeed have busi ness in Washington. For all of these, communities and individuals alike, senators and congressmen are the go-betweens, the men who know the ropes, who know whom to see and how, who smooth the way for the people back home who come here for one reason or an other and don't know their way around after they get here. CUPPOSE, for example, you " have come to Washington on necessary business with one or more of the multifold govern ment departments, or to attend one or more of the unbelievably numerous "hearings" with which business men and citizens gen erally are increasingly concern- r " Si' V, V-.-V y i v lb '. . S -: if ;V -'r ' X By mail or by telephone or by telegraph they familiarize them selves with the business of the constituent and then do their best to get it taken care of to his satisfaction. In this connection, keep in mind the very important distinc tion that the constituent is the CUSTOMER and friend of the senator or the congressman whereas the government em ploye or department head 01 what have you is apt to be some one who means little in the leg islator's life. It is for this highly important reason that your senator or your congressman is apt to be a ver EFFICIENT representative lot you. He is ON YOUR SIDE. IF you will keep in mind these significant facts in regard to your representative .in the con gress of the United States, you will be in a more intelligent po sition to vote when the next senatorial or congressional elec tion comes around. He or his secretary will listen to your business. If it is sound and legitimate business, he will interest himself in it and do what he can to carry it through to a successful conclu sion. He will MAKE APPOINT MENTS for you to see the peo ole (connected with the govern ment) whom it is necessary for you to see. It is just barely pos sible (although generally the government people whom you have to see are generous with their time) that you might have trouble in getting favorable ap pointments, if left entirely on your own resources, to see those whom you need to see. But if an important senator or congressman makes the appoint ment for you, your path Is smoothed unbelievably. The trif ling little obstacles are cleared away by such an introduction and you are assured of a courte ous and attentive interview. For all such, senators and con gressmen are business agents.
