SEPTEMBER 26, 1941 YEAR OLD SKY BOX E FOUR-MILE LAKE A radiosonde dated August 26, 1940, was found on the ground beneath a tree east of Four-Mile hike last Sunday by Ray Guches, Bellinger Lane, Griffin Creek district, Mrs. Guches reported today. jMr. Guches found the little box, used in gathering meteoro Jotjical data at high altitudes, while he was on a hurting trip, lie was attracted to it by its parachute strings wnlch dangled Bom the tree, Mr. Guches re lated. He was to mail the box today to the weather bureau at Washington, D. C, as directed by a tag attached to the radio sonde. One dollar Is paid for re turn of the boxes. ' Outside of the box was badly Beterioratcd, the batteries were corroded and the writing on the tog was faded but the Instru ments themselves appeared to be in good condition, Mr. Cliches related. W. J. Hutchison, chief of the aveather bureau here, said that recovery ot several old radio sondes has been reported recent ly by hunters, adding that many ire usually found in remote !iarts of the forests In the hunt ng season. He said he was in ormed that an Ashland man vhose name was not procured had found one of the boxes dated August 18, 1940, and had left it at Medford postoffice for mail ing to Washington. He added that he had been told of others who had found old boxes re cently and that the Seattle and Portland weather bureau offices had written to him that they had received inquiries from persons who had found radiosondes sent up from the weather bureau here. A. E. Johnson, representative of the Medford Building Trades Council, said today that pickets were withdrawn at 4:30 p. m. Thursday from the drive-in res taurant being constructed on North Riverside avenue by Henry Byers, following negotia ion of an agreement between the builder and the council. The job is now operating 100 per cent with A. F. of L. labor. Mr. Johnson said. The picket line was established Monday be cause, according to Johnson, union labor was not being em ployed and the union wage scale was not being paid laborer! and carpenters. Salem, Sept. 26. Serves 6. 10 BE ELECTED BY IT A community meeting to elect a council member will be held in the recreation tent of the mi gratory labor camp at 7:30 to night. A vacancy was created when the council chairman, Walter Moran, left for Klamath Falls to work in the potato har vest. His successor as chairman will be chosen by the council after tonight's election. The weekly dance will be held after the meeting. Programs were switched last night when conflicts in dates made it impossible for the Med ford high school entertainers to stage their show as had been planned. Instead the camp pre sented Its own amateur show, which had been postponed until tonight. Fourteen amateur acts were presented and the applause was so even for all of them that winners could not be deter mined. So all participants were given prizes. The high school program has been rescheduled for 7:30 p. m. Tuesday. The Rev. L. C. Kirby, pastor of the First Methodist church, will conduct religious services at the camp at 5 p. m. Sunday. Sun day school will be held at 10:30 a. m. Population of the camp has dwindled to about 160 as fam ilies leave to work In the potato harvest in Klamath county.
