' After spending years learning what colors of light will 'attract bugs into death traps, scientists have begun to meet success. The idea is to find the best light for human out-of-doors comfort at night. Lawrence C. Porter of the General Electric company at Cleveland and the Ohio agricultural experiment station have made a report. They say they don't know all the answers, but that red at tracts fewer Insects than any other color. But because red is not altogether aafisfactory to live under, or to use for porch game of cards, yellow light ten tatively la selected as the most satisfactory. A flame-colored lamp la very satisfactory, so far as bugs are concerned, when some fair seeing is also wanted. What the scientists now wish to find out is whether there is a difference between Insect preferences for colors. They point out that gnats are more troublesome than June bugs, since the gnats bite. Aside from the color differ ences, the most effective way to reduce the number of Insects is to lower the wattage of the light. There Is no such thing as a lamp that does not attract insects. For several years twine au thorities advised farmers they could get more for their hogs by selling at lighter weights more meat and less low-priced lard. The result has been a marked trend toward lean-streamlined porker. But since the government pro mised to keep the price of hogs up to at least S9 a hundred pounds (Chicago basis), farmers have found it profitable the time being to feed their hogs to heavier weights. One of the reasons heavy hogs have topped the market in re cent weeks has been that lard prices went up about two cents pound after announcement of the government support of prices. The only way additional pork can be produced between now and next fall la to put weight on hogs now on feed. Govern ment purchase of the heavy cuts has insured profits for the farmer who feeds more corn to his hogs.
