(P) The long stretch of hot weather tended to wilt shoppers' interest and the week's retail trade fail ed to hold its recent margin of gain over last year, Dun & Bradstreet said today in a week ly survey. "On the basis of reports re ceived from representative cities," asserted the review, "the total volume of retail trade this week was estimated S to 7 per cent above a year ago. "Almost all regions had narrower margin of gain than in the preceding week, when the average for the country was between 6 and 12 percent. "Percentage increases over a year ago were as follows: New Fngland 3 to 5, east and west 6 to 10, south 4 to 11, southwest 2 to 7, northwest 3 to 8, Pacific coast 1 or 2. K. C. WILL PICNIC AT UNION CREEK About 1,000 men, women and children are expected to attend the annual Knights of Colum bus district picnic at the Union Creek campground of the Rogue River national forest August 18. The picnic will be attended by Knights and their families and friends of Mcdford, Bend, Klamath Falls and Lakeview. The day's activities will begin at 10:15 a. m. with a patriotic flag-raising ceremony. At 10:30 an open-air mass will be cele brated by the Rev. Father J, M. Sheridan of Marshfield, state chaplain of the Knights of Col umbus. A short program of talks will be given after the mass and the picnic dinner will be served at noon. GETS'I Portland, Aug. 2. (P) Mu nicipal Judge Julius Cohn pre sented the "works" two years in the county jail and $1000 In fines to Ellis B. Snavely, 34, convicted on three major traffic charges. He was accused of driving an automobile while drunk, falling to stop at the scene of an acci dent, and operating a vehicle while his permit was under re vocation. His license was sus pended for a year after a drunk driving conviction in Novem ber, 1939. Camp Meeting At Nazarene Church Fills Auditorium The main auditorium was crowded last night to hear Dr. T. W. Willingham and Professor and Mrs. Elbert T. Tindley at the Indoor camp meeting at the Medford Church of the Naza rene, Holly at First street. It was evident last night that It would be necessary to open the second auditorium to accom modate the crowd tonight. Both the singing and the preaching have proven the source of wide attraction. Representatives from Grants Pass, Ashland, Talent, and Phoenix are attending. Hundreds of children, the youngest of whom were only 18 months old, marched 12 blocks in yesterday's parade dressed in pioneer costumes. Fish Eat Ducklings Bend, Ore., Aug. 2. OF) The carniverous German brown trout, sometimes known as the Loch Leven, got in bad with his appetite today. Fishermen saw ducklings and cygnets dls appearing from Bend's Mirror pond and later found the small, young birds in tha big fishes' stomachs. Changes Mind Portland, Aug. 2.
