PAGE ETGHT MEDFORD MATT, TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON. FRIDAY. AUGUST 2. 1940. Sport Graphs Billy Hulen Says; Baseball Season Should Continue For Fire Weeki Boxmen Tip Medco to Square Series - Title Tilt Tonight 3-2 Although the State league's regular schedule li completed and the semi-pro tourney has ' run its course, with Albany's terrific Alco-Oaks copping the latter, as expected, there should be considerable more baseball here this summer before King Football assumes the sports spot light. The Craters travel to Albany this week-end to play those .two postponed first-half games with the Oaks, then return to tangle with the Kansas City Monarchs and Satchel Paige next Wednes day night under the local glim mers. Oilier series are to be ar ranged with Grants Pass, Cres cent City, Mt. Shasta City and Dunsmutr, the latter two clubs of the Northern California loop. Tha baseball season. In fact, should last at least fWe mors weeks, and although there will be no more regular -league action the exhibition games should prove sufficient ly glamorous to keep Interest at a high pitch. Many times exhibition contests are more thrilling than loop tilts. For that matter, local fans still may see the Craters battling for the State league pennant. The two games in Albany Sat urday night and Sunday after noon will determine the first half title, and if Medford wins, a playoff series with the second half champs will be In order The second-half flag, also, is yet undecided, with Albany and Eugene deadlocked for the crown. Most clients were disappoint ed when Satchel Paige worked only the ninth inning against the House of Davids Wednesday evening, but the big Negro hurler really was 111 . . . he got ptomaine poisoning In Tacoma last week and was still under the weather . . . Wednesday aft ernoon, when the Monarchs played Grants Pass, Paige did not even put on his baseball suit, and the night before in Salem, when the Monarchs col lided with the Davids, he hurl ed only two innings and was hit hard ... Paige, as matter of fact, didn't plan to pitch here Wed nesday night he came to the ball park In his street clothes but when It was explained to him that most of the 2,500 fans were la the stands for the obvious reason of watch ing him cut loose, he agreed to lake the mound In the ninth Inning . . . next Wed nesday, when the Monarchs return to play the Craters. It Is hoped that Paige will be feelln' fit. . . . The Washington Redskins, pro grldders, will train in Spo kane this fall and travel 7.229 miles before getting back home for the National Football league season ...Alex McDonald. Crater shortstop and newly elected teacher and athletic coach at Medford high, is at tending summer school at Uni versity of Oregon to complete his studies for masters degree . . . Alex will meet the club in Albany tomorrow for the Al bany series. Wooden Box dust ed off Medford Corporation, 8 to 2, at the stadium last night to square the American league playoff championship series at one game apiece and set the stage for the third and deciding struggle at 9 o clock tonight. Medco copped the first playoff tilt, 11 to 1, Tuesday eve. The victor in tonight s battle will become Medford's 1940 pennant winner and jam the right to enter the district tour nament at Klamath Falls next Thursday and Friday nights. The first tournament game for the Medford winner will be against Ashland at 9:00 p. m. Thursday. Peccia Fans 10 Joa Peccia of Wooden box and Morrie Steincr of Medco hooked up in a sweet pitchers duel last night, with the former having the better of the argu ment, although each fllnger al lowed six hits. Peccia whiffed 10 Medcoites and walked seven, while Stclner fanned none un1 gave four bases on balls. They'll oppose each other again In the title game this evening. The Boxmen i clinched the contest in the first frame on a pair of walks, two base hits, an error and a fielders' choice, good for three runs. Although Medco threatened several times thereafter they couldn't punch across the tieing tally. Hank Pacheco, Wooden Box, I led all hitters with three singles in four trips, while Peccia clout ed the only extra base-hit of the game, a double. A fielding feature of the fray was Cal vert's spectacular running catch of Boyle's drive which cut off two more Wooden Box runs. Behind an 18-hit attack, Cop co drubbed Elks, 19 to 3, to enter the National league finals against Bear Creek. The two clubs will play the first game tonight, the winner to haul down the National loop title for 1940. Catholics Lose In other gRmes last night, Fluhrer's Breadcalcrs trounced the Catholic All-Stars, 15 to 3, and Bear Creek defeated Jen nings Tire. 9 to 4. Armenian's Next Opponent I'PQJUSO EXPECTED TO GIVE M'SHANE (J 5 V When tough Mike Naiarian, Armenian villain, steps Into the armory grspple ring next Monday night he will come face to face with George Wagner (above), popular clean and scien tific matmen. They'll clash in the six-round middle event, and Wagner Is expected to give an excellent account of himself. in the sandlot series were the Mt. Pleasant (Texas) Cubs. 1939 runnerup; Devils Slide (Utah) Cementers; Los Angeles Bank of America, and Springfield (Ohio) Crowell-Collicrs. Closing time for Too LAle to Claa ilfr Ada la 1:30 p. m. RED HOT GRAPPLE CRIPPENTOHURL Danny (Jitterbug) McShane may make it three straight grap ple wins in the armory Monday night, but if he does he'll have to hurdle his toughest foe thus far in Ernie Piluso, the ball of fire who has been on a short ring vacation while getting his Klamath Falls sandwich shop in operation. That's the opinion of the ma jority of local wrestling fans, anyway, who have watched Mc Shane dispose of George Wagner and Jimmy Goodrich in his last two starts here. And, who have witnessed - Piluso, in many matches, literally rip up the place as he sonnenberged op ponents into defeat. What Ernie can't do to grap piers of McShane's ilk just isn't being done, and that's why a large number of clients are sin cere in the belief that Danny may find Piluso a little too tough and capable, a little too fast and clever. Mike Nazarian, who roughed Otis Clingman into defeat last Monday, will take on George Wagner in the middle event. He figures to win, as Clingman and Wagner are rated about on a par. Bob Cummings, the Great Falls, Montana scientific grap pler, returns after a long absence to meet Clingman in the six round opener. Ladies night will be in effect. T Steve Crippen. with five vic tories and no defeats, will prob ably get the starting pitching call-in Albany Saturday night when the Craters and the Alco Oaks collide in the first game of their two-tilt series making up postponed contests from the first half Oregon State league race, Manager Tommy Hawkins said today. Sunday afternoon either Southpaw Jimmy Rego or Big Bill Lanning will do the fling ing, Hawkins stated. He added that possibly all three hurlers would see action. The club will leave tomorrow morning for Albany, and return Sunday after the game. Leonard Patterson will be un able to make the trip because of a wrenched knee he suffered playing Softball this week. Bill Lanning will play first base when he isn't pitching, and when he is on the mound Al Wray will be brought in from right field to hold down the initial cushion. 17 ENTER COUNTY TENNIS TOURNEY Seventeen Medford tennis players had registered today for the Jackson county tournament starting at 9:30 a. m.
