long stretch of hot weather
tended to wilt shoppers' interest
and the week's retail trade fail
ed to hold its recent margin of
gain over last year, Dun &
Bradstreet said today in a week
ly survey.
"On the basis of reports re
ceived from representative
cities," asserted the review, "the
total volume of retail trade this
week was estimated S to 7 per
cent above a year ago.
"Almost all regions had
narrower margin of gain than
in the preceding week, when
the average for the country was
between 6 and 12 percent.
"Percentage increases over a
year ago were as follows: New
Fngland 3 to 5, east and west
6 to 10, south 4 to 11, southwest
2 to 7, northwest 3 to 8, Pacific
coast 1 or 2.

AT UNION CREEK
About 1,000 men, women and
children are expected to attend
the annual Knights of Colum
bus district picnic at the Union
Creek campground of the Rogue
River national forest August 18.
The picnic will be attended
by Knights and their families
and friends of Mcdford, Bend,
Klamath Falls and Lakeview.
The day's activities will begin
at 10:15 a. m. with a patriotic
flag-raising ceremony. At 10:30
an open-air mass will be cele
brated by the Rev. Father J,
M. Sheridan of Marshfield, state
chaplain of the Knights of Col
umbus. A short program of
talks will be given after the
mass and the picnic dinner will
be served at noon.
The afternoon will be de
voted to a program of sports,
games, contests and entertain
ment for everyone.

pioneers who have lived

his appetite today. Fishermen
