MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. ORECOX. FRIDAY. AUCUST 2, 1940. PAGE THREE HORSEBACK TRIPS HIKING NOW BEST IN FOREST AREAS Short Side Jaunts Lead to Remote, Primitive Parts of Stately Timber Land The following recreational bulletin was issued today by Rogue River national forest headquarters: "Hiking or horseback trips to the more remote parts of the Rogue River national forest are most enjoyable now because of the unusually cool, clear weath er. "Good saddle horses may be rented at Lake o' Woods and Union Creek. From Lake o' Woods, a one-day trip by horse may be made into the Mountain Lakes primitive area, and short er ones to other lakes on the Cascade divide. From Union Creek the streams at the head of Rogue river and the peaks and meadows along the Umpqua divide offer many restful rides through the magnificent timber for which this district is noted. Surprises In Store - - "Even short hikes from- the roads and camp lead to innum erable areas with surprisingly remote characteristics. The most easily traversed trail of ' this kind is from the Union Creek camp to Natural Bridge, a dis tance of three and one-half miles on an almost level route. The trip to Seven lakes is the most popular for the more ardent hikers. At Dead Indian Soda Springs a beautiful trail leads up the south fork of Little Butte, little known to any but fisher- r v 103 r : (4 'TV ftl,Jt '? f V-- , -'J jsj Vv4 F i Mi: W . "Fishine continues good In most of the forest lakes and streams. Anglers are especially directed this week to the follow ing: Lake o Woods for bass and perch and silversides by trolling. "Fish lake, which is produc ing some good catches in spite of low water. "Fourmile lake, for rainbow with flies, especially in after noon and evening. "South and middle forks of Rogue river, using greyhackle flics with yellow bodies. "Mid, Crass and Cliff lakes in the Seven Lakes group, for deep fishing from raft. "Mill, Cinko, and Castle creeks and Rogue river above Foster creek. Fire Caution Urged "In the Rogue river below Trail, the cool weather has brought a few steelhead and several have been taken with royal coachmen and greyhackle flies; trout fishing continues to be excellent. The main summer run of steelhead has not yet appeared. "The berry crop at Huckle berry mountain is now at its peak and, although scattered, some good picking is available. Huckleberry lake on Umpqua divide is also popular. At both places the berries are unusually large. They may also be found at Parker meadows and Blue Rock in the Butte Falls district, near the Fourmile Lake road and on Dry creek near Lake o' Woods. "As the high winds prevalent every afternoon increase the forest fire hazard, it is hoped that the cool weather will not cause a mistaken feeling of safety with the use of fire by recreationists." COMMUTE BALKS EFFORT TO CALL TOJOOjOOO (Continued from wge One.) gon to hear reports on the Ore gon department. Allen pointed out that less than two members from each of the 119 Oregon posts is required to break the record. To Build Alaska Base. Seattle, Aug. 2. JP) The Post-Intelligencer said today it had learned from a reliable source the new naval air base at Dutch Harbor, Alaska, will be constructed by a Seattle-Spokane-Minneapolis syndicate at an initial cost of at least $2,900,-000. to get final ai.-tion in a month. He added that the legislation would clear up the important m.no.inn nf DmitrtWntinil U'Vllfh the manufacturers were inter-1 ested in. j In concluding his long dis- j cussion of conscription the i president permitted this direct i quotation: "I am distinctly in favor of I a selective service training bill and I consider it essential to adequate national defense." Total Defenso Needed Declaring he had abandoned long ago fhe practice of sending up what he called ready-made bills to be rushed through con-1 gress, Mr. Roosevelt added that 1 he was leaving to the legisla ture the age brackets for reg istrants under a compulsory training law. The simple fact Is, he con tinued, that the lessons of the present war show defense means total defense. Under modern circumstances, he con tinued, that means a lot of new machinery and equipment which the nation hasn't got but is beginning to get. He said that William S Knudsen, in charge of defense plans for industrial production, told him the other day that a lot of companies were proceed ing with $1,600,000,000 worth of orders for all kinds of ma terials and machinery without waiting for actual contracts. The United States, he de clared, had learned from the present war that nations with out trained man power were in a bad way. Meantime proposals to delay congressional action on con scription pending a drive for voluntary one-year enlistments in the army gained new ad herents in the senate. Gene Coy Colored Band At Oriental Gardens Thursday Gene Coy and his "Golden Gate" orchestra of San Francisco is set to play at the Oriental Gardens on Thursday, August 8. This popular colored attraction is making a real hit all up and down the coast, where they have done a surprising business. The band promises to break all rec ords, according to advance ticket sales. The band consists of 12 music ians and "Pinnochio" the tap dancing fool. STATE PAYS HUGE LI QUORSTOCKTAX Portland. Aug. 2. (PI The state liquor commission dug up $77,541 on August 1 liquor stocks today to meet the new national defense tax. Administrator J. J. Hauge ex plained the outlay will be "softer" In the future because it will be paid by the distillers at 75 cents a gallon and passed on to the commission as stocks are replenished. In turn the tax will be absorbed by the con sumer who will pay 25 cents a quart and 15 cents a pint more for liquor. Use Mall Tribune want ads.
