By Otto Jenssen Washington (U.R In the frigid wastes of the vast antarctic region, two little bands of men, separated by 1,800 miles of uncharted snow and Ice, are waiting for the long polar night to end to resume their search for an unknown coast. One group, headed by Richard B. Black of the department of interior, la waiting at a base 800 miles south of the southern most point of South America, at Marguerite bay, in Palmer Land. There are 23 men and 80 dogs at that location. Across the ice, 1.600 miles to the west la the other group of 33 men and a number of dogs. Their camp Is at Little America on the Ross barrier a floating Ice sheet several hundred miles long and some 40 feet thick. This Is approximately 2,000 miles south and east of New Zealand. The principal task of these (roups constituting the expedi tion of the U. S. Antarctic Serv ice headed by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd is to chart the coastline lying between their two bases. A section In the middle, about 900 miles long, was charted last year, but another 600 miles re mains to be mapped. ' The group at Marguerite bay is expected to start sooner than the other because it is farther from the pole and hence the night ends earlier. The men at the Little America base must wait until probably October. When their Job is completed, virtually the entire coastline of the Immense continent at the "bottom of the world," will be known, and this country's claim to share In Antarctica, when this is made, will be strength ened considerably. Both groups will use dogsled and airplane in making their surveys. Author Robert Service In Canada as Refugee An Eastern Canadian Port, Aug. 2 (P) Robert W. Service 66, who wrote "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" and numerous other popular rhymes of the Yukon, returned to Canada to day as a war refugee after an absence of 28 years. He was In Russia when the war started. After many diffi culties he reached France, but fled when the Nails swept down the coast of Brittany. HOP MARKET PROGRAM IN EFFECT AUGUST 5 Washington, Aug. 2. The agriculture department an nounced today that a new fed eral marketing agreement pro gram for hops produced in Ore gon, California and Washington would become effective August 8. The program, which replaces similar one In operation Inst season, sets up a machinery for controlling hop supplies during the 1940-41 and the 1841-42 marketing seasons. The "zebra clue" came in building terraces parallel, cur ving steps or basins around hill sides to lead off rainwater (low ly and safely. By time-honored fashion, far mers plow, even on steep hills, in straight furrows. But these are perfect "channels" for heavy rains to rush down, gouging away the topsoil. Back In 1907 Dr. Walte who retired five years ago at a U. S. department of agriculture plant pathologist plowed to build terraces that followed the cor tour of the hill. Each terrace was to have gradual down ward incline. But he would meet little hills or bumps that would force the terraces to go up. Whan To Quit One day at zoo he noticed zebras have curving, parallel stripes. Sometimes stripe end ed abruptly, or tapered off. Why not, he decided, simply stop a terrace when it came to an elevation, and let the water it was draining flow down to the next "step"? He did. John Cotton, extension soil conservationist at the University of Maryland, credits Waite with being the first Maryland farmer to start such terraces. Two Cash Crop They, and other conservation steps, proved profitable for Waite. He soon had rich, ter raced peach orchard, and recent ly has turned mainly to growing tobacco and daffodils as cash crop. Terraces and most conserva tion practices are not new, but. Cotton said, "there is a grim re awakening to the necessity of combatting erosion."
