WELFARE OUTLAY Total Expenditure $20,042 Compared With $20,879 - 4in April, Report Shows A monthly statistical sum mary iasued by the Jackion county public welfare commis ion showed today that total expenditure decreased 1 a t month to $20,042.52 from $20. 879.78 In April. The summary was made public following the commission'! monthly meeting Monday in city hall. As compared with April, last month brought reduction in costs in all the commission's forms of welfare but one. Ex penditures for blind assistance were the same each month. $264 for ten cases. General assistance, old age assistance and aid to dependent children cost less last month than In April. The greatest decrease was in general assistance or di rect relief. The total for last month, how ever, was higher than it was in May of 1939 when welfare expenditures aggregated $19, 251.18. With one exception, each kind of welfare cost more last month than in the name 1939 period. Blind assistance cost $245 in May last year as compared with $264 last month. W The Pendleton prepared ness assembly, which last month took the vanguard of national public demand for defense by organizing within two days a community-wide demonstration, begun with a parade, has not relaxed its belief that congress Is not pressing the defense pro gram rapidly enough. Today, over the signatures of its directors, who are represen tatives of police organizations, veterans' groups, service clubs and government organizations such as city and county, it sent the Oregon congressional dele gation copies of a new and stronger resolution, demanding the utmost siwed for defense. HILLSB0R0 WEEKLY IS JUDGED NATION'S BEST Hillsboro, Ore., June 19. (&) The National Editorial associa tion announced yesterday that for the second consecutive year an Oregon weekly has been judged the nation's best In the ovrr-1000 circulation bracket. W. Verne McKinney, pub lisher of the Hillsboro Argus learned his paper had won the honor for ll41. which was taken last year by the McMinn ville Register. LANE COUNTY CENSUS SHOWS 14.527 GROWTH Eugene. Kent Robblns of Ashland Is to be stago manager, while Richard Putney of Ashland will handle electrical duties. Book holders are Frances Schilling, Ashland, and Jean Grantham, Medford. . -' Assistant director . will be Dorothy Prultt, v e t e ra n member of the Shakespearean casts. Well known throughout southern Oregon for her dra matic ability, she is handling the adaptation of "Much Ado About Nothing" and is embark ing upon her sixth year with inv sruup. Original music la being com posed by John Reisacher of Medford. He is also a veteran member of the Shakespearean troupe and is prominent for his dramatic interpretation In com munity dramas. He will have charge of all music presenta tions for this summer's plays. LaMerle Beck has been ap pointed dance director and is working on dance routines for two of the plays. She also ap pears In two productions, "The Comedy of Errors" and "As You Like It," and bears a repu tation for dramatic portrayals. Director Cottrell has com pleted his cast for "The Com edy of Errors" and will an nounce the names this week. This completes all for produc tions from a casting standpoint and rehearsals will now be con tinued on full time basis. STATE LEGION HEAD URGES SENATORS TO AID BRIDGES OUSTER Grants Pass, June 19. -fP) In the "name of the American Legion of Oregon," Nlel R. Allen, department commander, today urged Senators McNary and Holman to support passage of a bill to deport Harry Bridges, alien leader of west coast labor. Allen's wire "urgently" re quested that McNary and Hol man do all In their power to have the senate Join the house in its favorable action "as un mistakable gesture of an arous ed citizenry exercising its pow er of sovereignty over aliens in our midst. We believe Amer ica's duty to herself In this time of crisis requires that she declare and exemplify In no uncertain terms . . . power which is actually the power of national self-preservation. "The citizenry now looks to congress to correct the weak kneed Indecision and vacillation of an executive agency of the government which now sym bolizes the attitude toward all aliens within our borders." OREGON RANKS HIGH IN JOB PLACEMENTS Salem, June 19 (IF) Al though 34th in population, Ore gon ranked 21st in private Job replacements, both in April and in the first four months of 1940, the state employment service said today.
