Driver Tests Examinations will be held here as usual Sat urday for persons who want licenses or permits to operate motor vehicles. A state exam iner will be in council cham bers on the top floor of city hall from 9 a. m. to 9 p. m Applicants are asked to report to him. Ex-Residents Here Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Jones and son Rus sell of Aberdeen. Wash., and Mrs. Bert Wortendyke and Mrs. Jack Skoglund of Portland ar rived last night by motorcar to visit relatives and friends here. Mr. Jones. Mrs. Wortendyke and Mrs. Skoglund are cousins of Paul Hanlin of 1018 East Jackson boulevard. They for merly resided in Medford. Meeting Saturday Jackson county Democratic central com-1 mittee will meet at 2 p. m. Sat urday in the Hotel Jackson, V. D. Miller, secretary, announced today. All Democratic precinct committeemen and committee women elected at the recent primary election are expected to attend. It will be the first meeting of the committee since the election. Refuel Here Two U. S. army pilots stopped yesterday at Med ford municipal airport to have their planes refueled, both be ing en route from Seattle Wash., to the army's air depot in Sacramento, Cal. The men were Capt. G. W. Brendt, fly ing a Curtiss pursuit plane, and Lieut. C. R. Adams, flying a Douglas transport plane. Adams was accompanied by a crew of three. . Held In Jail William Birt ley, 68, and Alvin Broe, 32. both of Klamath Falls, were being held in the Jackson coun ty jail today awaiting disposi tion of federal charges of fell ing liquor to Indians. They were brought to the jail from Klamath Falls last night by Paul Hanlin, U. S. deputy mar shal. They had waived pre liminary hearing before U. S. Commissioner Bert C. Thomas in Klamath Falls and held in $2300 bail each. It was the first time Broe had been charg ed with liquor selling but it was Birtley's fourth offense. Deputy Hnnlin said. Birtley. who completed a sentence for the same offense only last month, was quoted as saying he could not find work and was better off in a federal prison or road camp. Plane Passengers H. F. Cha- ney left for Portland by United Mainliner this forenoon. R. M. Hughes left by Mainliner for Portland early this morning, arrivals on the midnight Main liner were R. M. Huber. J. V. Robbins and J. G. Lundstrom. from Portland, and Mr. and Mrs. B. Stinson. from Chicago via Portland. Mr. Stinson is employed by United Air Lines at Chicago. Passengers depart ing on the midnight plane were V. M. Gregg and F. R. Berger, to Fresno. Cal.. W. G. Robin son, to Los Angeles, and Marge Tolosano. to Oakland. Col. J. (JP) Science launched a new move in agriculture here today by demonstrating a method to cure a diseased plant of what had been a mortal plant illness. The universal method of treat-1 ing plant and crop diseases nas nnnilll been prevention. Sick crops U U 1 1 (A Mil were never cured until recent ly in Virginia it was discovered that benzene fumes would cure tobacco plant of the highly de structive and costly disease known as downed mildew. Today Dr. E. C. Yarwood of the University of California. Berkeley, told the American As sociation for the Advancement of Science that fumes of sul fur would cure certain diseases of beans, clover, cucumbers, snapdragons and sunflowers. He described a snapdragon with rust, a disease which yel lows leaves, splits stems and which has meant that the snap dragon plant must be destroy ed immediately. He placed a snapdragon which had rust for five days under a bell jar. Sulfur fumes were turned on like oxygen in a tent. In five hours the snap dragon was well. Exactly the same quick cure happened with beans suffering from five-day-old rust. IIP) One person was burned, electric ser vice disrupted and a smoke stack wrecked by a brief light ning storm which swept over the Spokane area this morning Miss Hazel Donovan, a law clerk, was burned over her left side when lightning struck elec tric wires unaer which she was passing. Bridegroom Killed. Shaunavon, Sask., June 19. OP) . Clayton Huycke, 21, of Camas. Wash., a bridegroom of two days, was killed yesterday when an automobile driven by his bride, left the highway near here and rolled over several times. His bride and her moth er escaped injuries. Prematura Celebration. Olympia, Wash., June 19. (IP) Olympia had a premature Fourth of July celebration last night when fire broke out in a fireworks plant beyond the city limits. Traf: was tied up for 43 minutes while hun dreds watched approximately $4,000 worth of fireworks fill the air. Medford school superin tendent, is rapidly becoming well known throughout the country for her literary work. "They Last So Long" marks her seventh story published in the past year. (P) The seventh infantile paralysis death in this district since the disease broke out a month ago was recorded today with the death of Stanley Morton, 17, captain of the Stadium (Tacoma) high school track team and city hiRh hurdles champion. Morton had been in an Iron lung since he was hospitalized June 10. The youth's death Is the third in Tacoma and the fifth in Pierce county. Two other persons living In counties adjacent to Pierce have also succumbed to the disease.
