Salem Scare Amuses Twins San Francisco (U.R) The 4-year-old twins, Billie and Jim mie Johnston, found a bottle in the street and amused them selves by pretending there was $1,000,000 inside. They asked their mother if she could see It, too. Her eyes did not get beyond the label which read "arsenic." She rushed them to the hospital where they had a grand time watching the doc tors fuss over them'. Finally they believed the twins' story that the bottle was empty when they found it. VALUE OF NEGRO ACTING IN FILMS FPJ1RNI L.1 By Alexander Kahn Hollywood (U.R) The motion I picture screen haa been alow In recognizing the value the Negro may be to films, although the stage has long known the en tertainment possibilities of the Negro actor. Symbolic of the new-found movie recognition, of course, la the Academy award won by Hat- tie McDaniel for her histrionic efforts in "Gone With The Wind." That apparently was the signal for greater use of Negro actors In pictures. On the stage there never was a season In which the artistry of Negro players did not add to theatrical history. Such presen tations as "Porgy and Bess," The Green Pastures," "Porgy" and "Four Saints In Three Acts" have made the public aware of the talent of the Negro. Yet, until 1940, the cinema waa content to relegate the Ne gro player to minor lobs of com- ic relief. That is not true today. An outstanding example of a Negro player who has risen to almost starring proportions in a short time Is Eddie Anderson the Rochester of radio and movies. These, however, are not the only Negro personalities who have appeared or are available to appear on the screen. The movies can draw upon Paul Robeson. BUI Robinson, Willie Best, Louise Beavers, Ethel Wa ters, Louis Armstrong, Rex In gram and others who rank as experienced actors and singers. Jail To Hospital Butte, Mont. (U.R)E. Hcllman obtained a quick transfer from the city jail to St. James' hos pital by rolling off the top bunk of the Jail cell and landing on the cement floor below. Police psychiatrists were unable to de cide whether the "roll" was on purpose or accidental.
