PAGE ETGHT MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MED FORD. OREGON. THURSDAY. MAY SO, 1940. rnWfc SWUM By Jean Randall' Tt STtRDAY: Brtiula't schema works. Adelaide, wondering why her hotatkteping u L'm worse than usual, ogress to oo away tor a rest, and Isobel gladly agrees to run the house. Mac catches on to Brenaa't conniving. Chap'.tr 22 Home Sweet Home AT FIRST I thought It was lira, ply to get Adelaide thli vaca tion; aht does need a little reat from us, poor old girl!" aaid Mae. ' SSf now you ve got ner oil. something's worrying you. 1 aat down in the library hearing you pace about aa long aa I could bear it Want to tell me about It, Brenda?" She shook her head. "N-not Just yet, Mac, but thank youl Its terribly nice of you to realize I wouldn't indulge in auch fool iah behavior without without a purpose. I won't pace any more. You've taken part of my worry and he returned the amile. Thst's good!" Monday morning Brenda tin fered nervously at the breakfast table, waiting for isobel to sum mon Grenadine and give her the ordera for the day. That waa Adelaide'a habit. Daily she in dulged in a monologue whicn ran something like this: Well, Grenadine, I suppose we re going to nave to eat again today: Dear, dear, I wish some body would invent a new animal seems as if all the old ones have been used so many times we're all tired of them. Let's aee. Better start with dinner, that a the hard est. Steak no, we had steak last night. A roast, then. But I aaid I wouldn t have roast berore Sun day, meat is so terribly high. Chops? M'm: yes, I guesa chops. Tell the butcher to cut them thicker than he did the last ones. And Grenadine, try not to cook them till they're like bits of wood, won't you? "Vegetables. Well, there are al 1 waya potatoes, thank goodness. Creamed? No, better not creamed. Baked, then . . . What? Oh. dear, oh. dear! Yes, we did have them baked last night with the steak Grenadine, couldn't you lust for ones suggest something?" Amusedlv Brenda wondered how long thla sort of thing would fo on if an Interruption did not nvariably put an end to it. Some , times it waa the telenhone, some times it waa Miss Ormnnd who rose very early and began to crave the aoclety of others soon after breakfast, sometimes It was Grenadine herself who In a flash of unusual insniratlon suggested a tentative menu. Remembering all this, sha sat tenselv waitinp for Isobel to aum mon the cook. But Isnbel rose and atarted upstalra in the most lei surely fashion imaginable. "Isobel!" Brenda'a voice was panickv. "Aren't you going to plan dinner?" Isobel gave her a quiet smile. "The meals for three days ahead are planned, and the day's order waa in before you were down stairs. Grenadine has a typed menu with full directions not that I Intend to trust to her Judgment In the matter, howeverl In the kitchen." Brenda almost staecered with relief. This did sound like effi ciency! Pur Magie SHE shut herself Into her room and tried to apply herself to the day's square, but subdued sounds from below kept her from con centrating on her task. When she was railed down to lunch, she looked about her In astonish ment Dining room and living room had undereona alight but Important chances. "W-what have vou done. Iso bel" she faltered. "Nothing that can't be undone In a short time If Adelaide ob jects." Isobel viewed the work of her hind (and of Grenadlne'si proudly. The big wire plant stand filled with languishing Geraniums and Iw which shut off most of the liht in the two ast windows of the dining room had ben moved Into a south window In the library across the hall. The list less lace curtains had been re plneed hv erisn dotted Swiss. The dull surface of the big "lahneanv table shore with wax. The dining room l'wked airv and Inviting especially as Iobel'a clever hand had set a bowl nf golden calen dulas where they drew the morn ing sun. In the 1'vlng room, the same hand hsd been at work. Chairs hid forsaken their stiff parade about the room and gathered themselves cosilv about a table, or grouned in twos and hrees For the first time sinee Brenda had been in the house the numer ous magazines lav in trim nilea the newsnsners were folded and lav resdv to hand The mantel piece had lost its confusion of un related ornaments and was se renely beauti'iil with a pair of bavherrv randies In shining brass holders, the matching hnwl be tween holding ruaty chrysanthemums. "It's magic," Brenda gasped, (lancing about. "Purt magic! The new housekeeper shook her head, and hurried away up stairs. Monday was always a hard day for both Mac and Eric They came in a little apprehen sively that evening. Adelaide had her limitations but after all sha was housekeeper witb years of experience behind her. Eric eyed the changes In the living room with patent misgiv ings. Mac was more appreciative, complimenting lsnhl wermls. on the Increased comfort: but he too glanced anxiously now and then toward the dining room. Present ly Eric aat up with a lerk. Hia nose had caught an odor which made him remember that he'd had no luncheon that day. At aix-thirty exactly the grin ning Grenadine announced din ner. And what a dinner It was! "What ia thia heavenly atuff, Isobel?" Brenda demanded. "I've never eaten anything like it be fore in my life!" "Stew," was the demure reply. "Plain Irish atew well, perhaps not exactly plain since I flavored it a bit myself. You see, I want to keen the bills down while Ade laide ia away." Keep the bills down! The boarders stared at one another in amazement. If to serve, in addi tion to the delicious atew. delicate young beets, big bowl of salad whose leaves glistened with a dressing, tantalizingly good, crisp fresh rolls, and fig pudding with hard sauce if to serve all these to perfection was the way to keep the bills down, then heaven be praised for economyl Need Of Consolation ISOBEL mounted from triumph to triumph as the week went on. Gone were the alightly rumpled tablecloths and In their atead were fringed oblongs of gay pink and white material. "Bought at the five and ten with what I've saved on the grocery bills." aaid the housekeeper nonchalantly. "Mac, what do vou know!" Erie demanded one evening. "My laun dry has all been put away where it belongs, mind vou.' and not a button's missing, not a sock haa a hole. Home was never like this!" Mac's grateful glance went to Isobel who had flushed becoming ly. Erie waa loudest in his praises of the new regime but it was Mac who showed his aonreciation in tangible wavs. Mac brought Isobel a box of the chocolate nepner mlnta of which she was fond. Mae appointed himself official corre spondent to Adelaide, wording hia lettera tactfully ao that she neither worried about her house hold's welfare, nor experienced a pang at her young auccesaor's achievements. 'Well, that's one thing I've started along the right track any way, the little achemer consoled herself. She had need of some consola tion. It waa undenlnhlv Isnbel'a week. Both men accorded her the warm praise of those who had been uncomfortable without en tirely realizing it and now were sunrem-lv comfortable. Brenda soon could take a otilet nrlde In effnrta of her own, "though I can't serve 'em on the table twice a dav aa Isohel does." sh thought, sighing audibly. The greenhouse on the Aher- nathv fnrm was In orocesa of con struction. Ned Bsrrow telephoned her trlomnhantlv that he had rot Ab to listen to reason on the sub lect. . "How?" Brenda marveled, and Indeed she did wonder how so difficult a feat had been accom plished. "Just as vnu suggested " he said gratefully. "I had some blueprints made, and I got a list of horrid nrirklv plants that some Chicago exnert recommended. I wired him 'or advice Then t t"nk the whole lot to Alnlne and she went msd over 'em. I let her rave a while, snd then proposed tht the twins take me Into nartner.shin. thev to sunnly the land.
