Set up Limits Are Cited San Francisco (U.P) Brazil Is the "all-essential" country In South America for making pos sible the carrying out of the United States' new policy of In suring both Americas from in vasion, according tc Major-Gen. David P. Barrows of the U. S. army. Barrows, former president of the University of California, prepared a detailed study for the national defense section of the Commonwealth club of California on the new problems created by America's determin ation to assume the defense in both southern Atlantic and southern Pacific waters. Copies of the report have been placed in the hands of President Roosevelt, congres sional leaders and the navy and war departments. Two Oceans Considered Explaining that a fleet can only operate within a radius of 2,000 to 2.500 miles, and an air force within a smaller area, Barrows points out the effec tive defense of the American fleet toward the south would be limited merely to the northern countries of South America. On the Pacific side, he points out, the circle of the fleet's effec tiveness would pass through Peru. The present Atlantic bases, he said, furnish protec tion only as far south as the northern half of Brazil. "While we can make our de fense of the Panama canal and the Caribbean effective with our present naval and air bases, yet if we are to carry out our newly defined policy in North and South America, we must have help from the southern continent," he report stated. "That help must necessarily be less military than naval in cooperation with our own ef forts. "in south America," In my opinion, "the essential state Is Brazil. Brazil Is a mighty state, embracing half of the continent and half of the people. "I mean by cooperation. Bra zll't willingness to put whaf ever she hat that is useful to us at our disposal." NAVY TO SPREAD ANTI-SUB NETS New Type Aircraft Cannon Also to Take Large Part of Navy's Emergency Fund Washington, May 30. P) Congress learned today that a substantial part of the navy's share of emergency defense funds will go to protect 24 of the nation'! harbors from tub marine attacks and for the pur chase of a new type of aircraft cannon. The Information came with publication of testimony of high-ranking officers during committee hearings on the $1. 473.000,000 naval supply bill preparatory to tending the measure to a joint senate-house conference committee. Rear-Admiral W. R. Furlong, chief of the buerau of ordnance, said the navy planned to spend a total of $27,500,000 for anti submarine nets at 24 harbors and fleet anchorages. An addi tional $8,000,000 was asked for the acquisition of 20 special type boats to serve as net tend ers. The harbors were not identified. Buy French Gun Patent. Furlong testified that the army and navy were buying for $400,000 the patent rights to France't new Hispano-Suiza-Burket 20-millimeter aircraft gun and that it was planned to put 2,000 of them in new war planes. The European war has shown, he said, that ordinary machine guns were of little use against armored planes. Furlong said the navy had obtained considerable success in developing armor planes, large ly using armor supplied by manufacturers of saws and safes. Rear Admiral S. M. Robinson, coordinator of shipbuilding, told the committee the navy's pro gram called also for equipping the entire fleet with devices for protection against magnetic mines and for the development of mine sweeping gear. "Rebecca" Pleases Craterian Fans At Wednesday Showing For quite some time much has been heard about "Rebec ca," the motion picture adapta tion of the du Maurier best seller of the same name. Yes terday, it opened a four day showing at the Craterian the atre and Judging from audience response, is going to do in Med ford just what it s been doing elsewhere p lay to capacity crowds throughout its run. 'Rebecca" is a picture among pictures. Of course, it had a story that was definitely estab lished as a favorite of two con tinents. But stories have reached the screen that were oft-times unrecognizable and, sometimes, even though recognized, sadly mishandled. With "Rebecca" such is not the case. Primarily it is a mystery ! drama in the true sense of the word. Alfred Hitchcock has ; been recognized as the master 1 director of suspense and mys-1 tery so what could be better i than to have him "megging" the film play. Stroke of for tune Number One. The two lead characters In the story and the secondary lead are of prime Importance. With the wrong players giving the wrong portrayals, a great story would be nothing but hash. Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine, with Judith Anderson playing the house keeper, make evident a com plete anderstandlng of the spirit of the novel. Olivier definitely establishes himself after a note worthy performance in "Wuth erlng Heights" to start things his way. And Joan Fontaine here becomes a star no longer Gene At Roxy ik . mmm m mmmmmmm (Cm 6 "America's Cowboy Number One" Gene Autry, comet to the Roxy theatre for tomorrow and Saturday in his newest singing romance, "In Old Mont erey," with June Storey and Smiley Burnette in support. Laurel and Hardy't "The Fly ing Deuces," will play on the same bill with Autry. Just the lister of Olivia da Hiv illand but a name worthy of big things In the future. Judith Anderson Just about steals the show. As Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper turned sadist by adoration of her first mistress, she Is marvelous. And George Sanders, Nigel Bruce, C. Aub rey Smith and Reginald Denny to name a few of the others, also render outstanding per formances. "Rebecca," with ltt splendid direction, its tuperb character izations. Its tmooth flow of ac tion, Its ever-Increasing tempo of suspense. Is the sort of pic ture that It often wished for but seldom realized. In other words, it's great film fars. One thing more, to properly HOLIDAY SCHEDULES TODAY at Craterian & Rialto Theatres 4 Complete Shows 1 :45 - 3:1 5 6:45-9:15 ZANE GREY'S BLAZING SAGA OF THE SAGE BRUSH! tniey the story, "Rebecca" should ba seen from Its begin ning.
