In Detroit, Herbert Busse, German submarine commander In the war and commander of the German veterans' post, said his group had withdrawn from the parade "to avoid any em barrassment to other foreign groups. All but two of the post's 86 members are American citizens and the other two have their first papers toward natur alization. Only American flags were .tarried In the Detroit parade. TRAFFIC DEATH RATE IN OREGON DECLINES Salem (U.PJ The traffic death rate for the first four months of this year in Oregon was a fraction under the rate for the same period last year. Earl Snell, secretary of state, re ported. The death rate for this per iod was 12 persons killed per 100,000,000 miles of travel com pared to a rate of 12.10 for the corresponding period a year ago. GASOLInTsALES RISE FOR MONTH IN OREGON Salem (U.PJ Gasoline con sumption in Oregon during April amounted to 20,724.961 gallons, an increase of 755.884 gallons over that of April, 1939, the state department said. Total tax paid on the gaso line during the month amount ed to $1,036,248, an Increase of $37,794 over the 1939 tax Income. By JcV Stinnett Washington Over in .the block-long munitions building, whose architecture is early 20th century whitewashed barracks, the army boys have torn from their books that venerable say ing, "You can't beat the Dutch." Sifting down the reports of the Nazi's five-day blitzkrieg of Holland, the army experts have concluded that the fifth column again proved itself the most val uable weapon developed in modern warfare. The secret magic with which the Nazi hordes over-ran Hol land, although the Dutch had been preparing for such an emergency for years, can, say the army men, be summed up in two words Internal combustion. For example, from the very outset of the German invasion, snipers took a toll of Dutch sol diers from the roofs and win dows of buildings even in the well-policed cities of The Hague. Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Two Cops on Duty When the sixth column, or parachute troops, arrived at one of the main airports near Rot terdam, only two civil police men were on duty the only logical conclusion being that someo.ie In thp army had or dered Mil troops away from the airport at the zero hour. There's one thing more, though this occurred In Bel glum. Army officers who fought in World War I looked over the collapse of Namur, and the ap parently ineffective resistance of the outer forts of Liege and ran back through th page of memory. Kaiser's Trojan Horse There, they found the stories of the fall of these two great fortresses in 1914, and reports current then that a "fifth col umn" had been working for months with the German high command to bring about their capitulation. A former intelli gence officer recalls that Germ an imperialists, months before August, 1914, bought large es tates near these fortresses, and showed a great predilection for building cement tennis courts. It wasn't discovered until Bel gium was a shambles that the "tennis courts" were cement slabs 30 feet deep, and really hidden emplacements for big guns that battered the forts in to heaps of crushed rock. The conclusion here is that that "secret weapon" of Hitler's is no more than this same fifth column. The report that the men in fortress Eben Emael sudden ly discovered their machine guns and small cannon would not work was the clue. Some where among those 1,000 men who threw up their hands in surrender must have been doz ens or even scores who walked the Nazi glory road Instead of the trail to prison camps.
