The New Almaden Is the oldest quicksilver mine in the United States and has an im portant place In mining books and history. During the period of 1848 1926, it Is credited with hav ing produced from $65,000,000 to $75,000,000 worth of quicksilver. But from a mining commun ity of 13,000 people in its hey day of the '70s it has dwindled to an almost uninhabited region, where a few people work spor adically at extracting quicksil ver, and where tourists occas ionally pass to have a glimpse at the spot that once figured so remarkably in the mining days of early California. But all of this is now sched uled to change rapidly, and the district is expected to take on much of its former activity and regain some of its former population.
