Hitler Blundered
in Scaring British
Wisecracks G.B.S.
London, May 24. (U P
The English wit and play
wright, George Bernard
Shaw, says Adolf Hitler has
made the "awful blunder" of
frightening the British.
"Now that we're thoroughly
frightened," he said, "we'll be
all right. Until the English
are frightened they never do
anything but play cricket,
football, hopscotch and tennis.
"The kaiser made the mis
take of frightening the Eng.
lish and now Hitler has made
the same awful blunder .
now Hitler is going to find
out what we're like when
we're frightened."
H. G. Wells, historian, said.
"Thank Heaven for the
change. But why dasn't it
done before?"

price of mercury from $50 to
$172 a flask, the world-famous
New Almaden quicksilver mines
of Santa Clara county are to
be worked over by a new $500,
000 corporation.
The New Almaden Is the
oldest quicksilver mine in the
United States and has an im
portant place In mining books
and history.
During the period of 1848
1926, it Is credited with hav
ing produced from $65,000,000
to $75,000,000 worth of quicksilver.
But from a mining commun
ity of 13,000 people in its hey
day of the '70s it has dwindled
to an almost uninhabited region,
where a few people work spor
adically at extracting quicksil
ver, and where tourists occas
ionally pass to have a glimpse
at the spot that once figured
so remarkably in the mining
days of early California.
But all of this is now sched
uled to change rapidly, and the
district is expected to take on
much of its former activity and
regain some of its former population.
