What the WRA. Is Doing IT'S not too late to remind the good people of Med 1 ford that THIS WEEK has been set aside for "open house" inspection of W.P.A. professional and service projects. Certainly, those who foot the bill the taxpayers should require no urging whenever the opportu nity is presented to know more what goes on within the W.P.A. or, for that matter, within any govern mental agency. A lot of money is being spent for work-relief, yet the average tion of the many and varied activities of this largest of the alphabetic family the W.P.A. jlEDFORD and Jackson County have sponsored a number of work projects. We have benefitted greatly from the W.P.A. cal relief and unemployment problems in tangible public improvements. Medford s airport has been bettered, county roads and bridges have been con structed, recreational areas improved. Professional and service projects, however, have a highly important place in the work relief picture and this "open house" week is held to familiarize the public with these less known, yet necessary portions of the W.P.A. program. FOUR projects are now in operation in Jackson County. Heading this list is the surplus com modity distribution work. This important activity is handled in a room located in the rear of 31 North Bartlett street. This commodity distributing point should be visited by Medford and Jackson County people so that they may know the local scope and im portance of this project. It might be pointed out to those rural schools which are not already providing lunches for mal nourished youngsters and children from low income families, that surplus commodities are available for just this purpose. No better use could be made of surplus foods than to furnish energy-giving, fortify ing lunches to young folks who NEED them I ANOTHER project underway in Jackson County is malrmrr itnccihln iYit invoelirruti'nn rf trio taniirpo tiiuuiiic jivivi v IV. triiv ill Vh'Viutivii s a. tuv jv vt v materials of Jackson County and Oregon history. The aim of this proiect and preserve facts dealing with the early days here for the enlightenment of future generations. A survey of school housing facilities throughout this county is another project. Attention is given to lighting, ventilation and other important factors in modern schools with the aim of encouraging greater standardization. Tax delinquency, a serious problem in city, county and state government, is being made the subject of careful study in another W.P.A. project. These three survey projects are operated from the county court house. I70RK of the Adult Education classes is on dis play at S34 West Second street. These classes are open to people of all ages. The public should see this exhibit and know more about this particular phase of W.P.A. With certain pride, those who head the profes sional and service projects in this county and through out the nation are referring to this as "This Work Pays Your Community" week. fF course, all regret that economic conditions have necessitated such a big scale work-relief program. It's a heavy load for the nation's taxpayers and the sooner that industry can take up the slack in unem ployment and return W.P.A. workers to private fields of usefulness, the better. But, in the meantime, the Works Project Adminis tration is makkig a sincere effort to make work-relief dollars do double duty give employment that will preserve the skills and self-respect of needy people and. at the same time, provide improvements and services that will have lasting value to the public. FIT FOOD TO The corrective protective, re juvenation or basic health diet given by 0' Doc Brady generally evokes moans and groans from those who, like my self, are inord inately fond of b u c k w heat pancakes and maple syrup and when I say pancakes of course 1 mean yeast raised, and none of your sour milk and soda ersatz , friend corn meal mush, hot fresh rolls, crisp buttered toast, waf fles, etc. But remember it is only a fundamental or model health diet on which to build or pattern your own diet. Its essential pur pose is to augment the daily intake of vitamins and minerals vhich are deficient in the every day refined diet. And you know by now, I hope, that the carbo hydrate delicacies mentioned above, as well as most others in the carbohydrate class, such as sugars, syrups, ice cream, cake, candy, honey, pastry, cookies, puddings, are either devoid of vitamins and minerals or poor in these elements altho all too rich in calories. A diet calculated to keep you fit, especially to promote normal gastrointestinal function, must provide several times the mini mum amounts of the vitamins, according to McCollum, Borsook and many other authorities, re quired to prevent severe defici ency diseases such as beriberi at:d pellagra. I, Ol' Doc Brady, would amend that dictum to read vitamins and minerals, in stead of just vitamins. However, it seems that most of the foods which are naturally rich in vita mins are at the same time natur ally rich in minerals. Such a diet includes not less than a pint of milk daily, a half pint glass of orange Juice or to mato juice or preferably eat tne citrus fruit or tomato itself, an egg, one liberal helping of two or more fresh vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, carrots, string beans, cabbage, asparagus, broc coli, the carrots and cabbage preferably raw, the water in which vegetables are cooked ad ded to the food (for it contains a considerable portion of the min eral elements and the vitamins). If more food is desired, take it in the form of milk, vegetables or fresh meat. A hen who prefers kit tens to chicks is an oddity on the farm of Mrs. Dick Lewman. Recently Biddy, the hen. was setting in a manger in the barn when she spieo a brood of kit tens in the same manger. The kittens were only a few hours old. Biddy immediately forsook her eggs to hover over the kit tens. To save the kittens Mrs. Lewman had to take the hen away and put her in a coop.
