MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE!" MEDFORD. OREGON. FRIDAY. NOVEMBER 17, 1930. PAGE THREE BUY 1,000 ACRES (continued irum page one) neburg and Crestbrook ranches near Medford. The seeds to be raised will be Out, crystal ball! It's in the cards HOW TIME FLIES! Here it is already 1964. Yet we can remember back to 1939 as if it were yesterday. Well can we recall the scores of young sters who joined this Company in the year of the World's Fair. We couldn't forget them if we tried, in fact, for they are our key men our "bosses." Now we're not trying to in fringe on Madam Tea-Leaves, the seeress, and her crystal ball. No crystal ball is needed to make sure where, after 25 years, the unlimited opportunity for advancement which is basic pol icy with this Company will land members of our entering class of '39. It would be simpler to tell you that of the 180 employees who joined this Company 25 years ago, ill have bettered themselves. One is assistant general sales manager. Another is captain of a tanker. Five are branch managers. Thirty-nine have advanced to important ex ecutive posts. We speak con6dently about 1964 solely to point the fact that this year's newcomers the clerks, "roustabouts," office boys can count on a future wherein merit means promo tion. They will be the bosses of 25 years hence. And equally important years will have be come no handicap. They'll still be on theix way up. Standard Oil Company of California marketed throughout the United States and in foreign countries, Mr. Hoover said. He himself has been producing and market ing winter blue grass seed for several years, having developed the grass alter discovering a patch of volunteer growth. Valley Well Suited The Rogue river valley Is peculiarly adapted to the pro duction of grass seeds, afford- ng better quality and a higher yield than elsewhere," Mr. Hoover declared in predicting the production of grass seed as new principal business of southern Oregon. "So far grass is concerned, the Rogue River valley offers more oppor tunities than any other section of the United States." Part of the 1,000-acre nursery is now being prepared for the planting of grass, Mr. Hoover re lated. A nurse crop will be put in and about 300 acres will be planted this fall to winter blue grass. In March about 500 acres will be planted to ladino and lotus and next autumn the en tire acreage will be seeded to the winter blue grass, he stated. Ladino and lotus will continue to be planted in season to form a combination crop, better re sults and year-around produc tion being procured by this pro cedure, he explained. Grazing goes hand-in-hand with the production of grass seed and later cattle will be brought in to pasture on the land, Mr. Hoover related. Regis tered Herefords will be brought from Dr. Poston's cattle ranches, he added. Story Interested Doctor Dr. Poston became interested in winter blue grass a few years ago after reading about the pro duct, its development by Mr Hoover and its varied uses in an article written for Country Gen tleman by Mrs. Adeline B. Hinck, Medford resident. The surgeon made numerous trips to Medford and conducted a thor ough investigation of winter blue grass possibilities and of the Hoover methods of production Winter blue grass is distantly related to the famed blue grass of Kentucky, though Mr. Hoover asserts the southern Oregon product is superior to the Dixie article. It does not, however, compete in any way with the Kentucky grass as it grows in the winter whereas the blue grass of the south is a summer product. In fact winter produc tion is hailed as one of the im portant values of the southern Oregon blue grass, for through it year-around pasturage is pos sible. Other special qualities are claimed for the winter blue grass. 4 grade steers; week's top strictly good grain-fed steers S9.50; best led heif ers 8 25, grass heifers mostly 7 50 down; canner to common cows sal able around 4 504 5.00; good beef cows salsble around $5.76 rtt 6-50; sau sage bulls quotable o.0(M 6.00; good beef bulls salable around 5.75jt 6.50; sausage bulls quotable 5 006.00; good beef bulla salable sround $6.25; good to choice, vealers quotable S8.0O t 9 50.
