Gilstrap re turned to her home on Geneva street this week from the north where she spent ten days visit ing. In Portland Mrs. Gilstrap was the house guest of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Eberhart and attended the Stanford-University of Ore gon football game In Portland. In Eugene she visited her other daughter and her husband Mr. and Mrs. Edward Walker. Greenleafs Hosts To House Guests Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Hutton of Santa Monica, Cal., are expected to arive here today to spend a few days visiting Mr. and Mrs. William L. Greenlcaf at their home on the Old Stage Road. , Mr. Hutton is a former editor of the Santa Monica Bay Out look and at present is a feature writer for the Los Angelas Times. He is also the author of several publications and well known in southern California literary and dramatic circles. Luncheon Meet For A.A.U.W. American Association of Uni versity Women will gather to morrow afternoon at the Hotel Med ford for a luncheon and pro gram meeting at 12:30 o'clock. A feature of the program will be a discussion of the neutrality act by Miss Josephine Kirtley and Mrs. Justin Smith. Mrs. C. I. Drummond will be in charge of a musical program and Mrs. L. C. Taylor Is general program chairman. All members are asked to attend. Many Attend Card Party Thursday St. Mark's Episcopal church parish hall was decorated in a profusion of fall flowers yester day afternoon for the altar guild's annual luncheon and card party affair. Thirty tables of bridge were In play throughout the afternoon with the following guests receiv ing prizes: Mesdames Dick Antle, Charles Gall, S. E. Jarvl, Frank lyn Woodward, Bayard Gctchell and Paul Janney. Luncheon was served by the guua women. Mrs. B. L. Lage- aon was chairman of the com mittee In charge of the very suc cessful and enjoyable event. Mrs. Raymond Fish is presl- aeni of the guild. Card Party Is Recent Event Wenonah club met at Redman hall this week for a regular card party. Prizes were won by Peg gy Purdin, Leah Ivle. Commit tee In charge was Florence Rush, Peggy Purdin, Esther Powell, Carrie Milnes, Velma Rogers and Gladys Dooms. Guests for the affair were Mar garet Brownlee and Gcorgie Templer. Wenonah Club To Have Party Wenonah club will sponsor a public card party this evening at 8 o'clock in the Redman hall on Apple street. Pinochle and bridge will be played through out the evening with prizes for winners and a door prize being awarded. Drager Home Is Scene of Party Vern Drager, Jr., entertained a few of his friends at a party Wednesday evening. Games were played and mo tion pictures were shown after which refreshments were en Joyed. Guests Included Mary Lou Van Schoorl, Betty Frey, Leon Mc Dougal, Phillip Gates, Mr. and Mrs. George T.. Frey and the host's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vern Drager. Calendar LINE TO G. P. Grants Pass, Oct. 20. (API Crews of the California Oregon Power company this week began reconnaissance surveys to locate a route for a proposed new transmission line to Grants Pass One crew, at least, was study. ing a route east through the Applegate valley. The population and business growth of Josephine county have overtaxed the present line and an increasing number of power failures have harassed the com pany and its customers. Most of the failures have occurred on the transmission line between Gold Hill and Grants Pass, fre quently cutting off service to all of Josephine county. The new line proposed would supplement the one now in use, which parallels the Pacific highway. PACES GAINS IN Total Retail Trade Is Far Ahead of September Last Year; Lumber in Demand Then came department stores 13 6, furniture 13.2, hardware 12.3 and apparel 12.1. Oregon communities running well ahead of last year were Eu gene up 31.6, Bend 22, Astoria 13.8, Salem 13.4, Portland 12.3 and Klamath Falls 18.4. The visitors made the only real scoring threat of the game when they drove to a first down on the Loggers' three-yard line in the fourth quarter, only to lose the ball on downs. (AP) Paced by strong gains In the Pacific northwest, retail trade In the Pacific coast states ran far ahead of last year in Septem ber, census reports showed today. The bureau's monthly survey covered an even 7000 stores. In Oregon they bettered last year's dollar volume 11.8 per cent, In Washington 11.7 per cent and in California 6.3 per cent. Relative improvement during the month stood out on compari son with August gains over last year. They were: Oregon 4.4, Washington 6 and California 4.7. Jewelry Leads Actual reported sales, large enough in all three states to fur nish what statisticians call an adequate sample, were: Oregon $7,188,215 in 897 stores, up 8.1 per cent from August. Washington $10,923,378 in 1365 stores, up 7.6 for the month. California $46,752,033 in 4783 stores, off 6.1 from August. Jewelry stores led trade gains in all three states. In the north, where this line has been show ing to strong advantage earlier in the year, the gains were spec tacular. . Washington state jewelry stores reported an average gain of 40.7 per cent over the 1038 month s business. In Oregon it was a 38.7 per cent gain. Cali fornia's 13 per cent increase nosed out the second place motor dealer gain of 11.1. Lumber in Demand Other leading lines in Oregon, with percentage gains over 1938, were lumber and building ma terials 22.6, automobiles 21.2, ap parel 14.3 and department stores 12. Washington's second best gainer was automobiles? up 14.9. ARMY COMPLETING PLAN FOR WAR SERVICE The Salvation Army war de partment is progressing rapidly in the organization of a wide net work of centers of work among troops in France, according to word received today by Capt. Reginald Vincent, officer in charge of the local corps. Twenty-five new centers, in ' addition to the 14 already in! operation are in course of open-j ing or are planned for the im mediate future, Captain Vincent was informed. "The governments of England and France are giving friendly and authoritative assistance," the captain said. "Letters have been addressed to military commanders-in-chief to arrange for Salva tion Army representatives to be received and given facilities for their inquiries. This Is being done wherever the Army's staff of "reconnaissance" officers are calling. "Huts which can be delivered and erected in ten days are being ordered. Many of them are of the semi-mobile type, so that when the camp moves on the hut will move on, too. "In many centers aged persons and children have been safely evacuated under the Army's care. A correspondence bureau has been established in France to maintain weekly contact with soldiers on active service and their families. "Nearly all of the Salvation Army's men officers of France have been mobilized for national service, which has necessitated the appointing of many women officers to war work."
