(AP) Diplomatic circles noted with keen interest today fresh indications Britain was carefully avoiding stepping on the toes of Soviet Russia, despite the latter's close ties with Germany A beautiful China pheasant, evidently tired from dodging hunters, chose to alight on South Grape street near the Davis Transfer company this morning. While the rooster was resting, apparently unaware of its un usual surroundings, it was cap tured by two boys. who. im pressed with the brid's brilliant coloring, decided to try and lo cate an artist to make a drawing of it. So, with bird in hand, they walked over to Marshall-Smith-Leonard in search of an artist. This firm in turn advised them to take their pretty captive over to the Crystal Spring pack ing company. At the packing company, the boys turned the pheasant over to Jim Walker, bookkeeper, who. also struck by the birds' beauty at once decided to take pictures of it and then have it stuffed. Mr. Walker tied adhesive tape on (he pheasant's legs so it wouldn't walk off and proceeded to make plans for its future when all of a sudden the bird flew off, adhesive tape and all. Mr. Walker later made an ap peal to the public to return his pet, dead or alive if found, be cause he is sure it is the most beautiful pheasant in these parts. Earl said today. O. L. Rhine smith, campus policeman, has gone to Corvalhs to investigate the report Oregon students were caught in the act of burning the campus. Names given by the appre hended youths do not check with any on file at the registrar's of fice here, but it is possible as sumed names were used. Photographs of the "culprites' taken by State college authori ties will arrive here this after noon and will be checked with identification pictures in univer sity files. It is thought that the act on the Corvallis campus was plan ned as retaliation for a coat of orange and black paint that ap peared this week on the huge O on Skinner's butte here. A. Butler that Britain's military pact with Poland did not apply to any Russian aggression. Butler told the house of com mons yesterday, in reply to a question as to whether the pact was inteded to cover the case of aggression by powers other than Germany: "No sir. During the negotia tions which led up to the signa ture of the agreement it was understood between the Polish government and his majesty's government that the agreement should cover only the case of aggression by Germany, and the Polish government confirm that this is so." Diplomatic quarters said the treaty with Turkey might tend to bring the Balkan states more closely together and lessen ten sion between them. These sources said Britain always had favored any steps to enable the Balkans to get together in their common interest. Britain counted Germany twice a loser stymied both by their treaty with Turkey and by bad weather on the western front. RUSSIAN PAPERS T Use Mall Tribune want ads. Moscow, Oct. 20. (AP) The British French - Turkish treaty was all but ignored today by the Moscow press, which limited comment to a warning against any attempt "to make a bloc against Soviet Russia" or to ex clude her from settlement of im portant European problems. In an article on the 20th an niversary of fighting against the white (anti-bolshevist) Russians, the communist party newspaper Pravda said recent treaties be tween Russia and Germany on one hand and Russia and Baltic states on the other had greatly strengthened Russia's position in world affairs. 1 Pine Business Off. Portland, Oct. 20. AP) Re ports from 115 mills showed last week's new business of 81, 121,000 board feet of lumber was 14 per cent less than the previous week, the Western Pine association said today. Ship ments reached 82,213,000 feet and production 81,011,000, both I about the same as the previous week. Y 10 I San Francisco, Oct. 20. (AP) Ninth corps area headquarters announced today two of the army's most modern fighting planes, the Douglas B-18-A bomb er, would leave Hamilton and March fields on October 30 on a recruiting tour of the eight states in the area. The public was invited to view and inspect the fighting equipment during stops of ap proximately 24 hours at many of the principal towns and cities on the itinerary. The two giant bombers are the latest in design as defensive and offensive weapons. They are twin-motored, weigh about seven tons and have a cruising speed of more than 200 miles an hour. Crew of the bomber from Hamilton field will be: Captain Wilfred J. Paul, air corps, pilot; Second Lieut, Murray W. Crow der, air corps, co-pilot: Private Raymond A. Cantwell, air corps, crew chief; Private Frank W. Summers, air corps, radio oper ator, and Sergeant Ralph M. Marley, army recruiting service, from the ninth corps area re cruiting publicity office. All members of the crew except Ser geant Marley are from the ninth corps bombardment squadron at Hamilton field. Itinerary, with overnight stops at each city, includes: Walla Walla, November S; Wenatchee. November 8; Yakima, November 7; Pendleton, November 8; Port land, November 9; Eugene, No vember 10; Medford, Novembei 11, and Klamath Falls, Novem ber 12. Major Charles C. Quigley. corps area recruiting officer, and officers in charge of the flight said weather conditions possibly might alter the schedules slightly. Non-Skid Cinders. Charleston, W. V., Oct. 20. (AP) A "non-skid" cinder will help keep motorists driving straight on the icy West Vir ginia highway this winter. The road commission announced that it not only has a new mechan ical system for spreading cin ders at danger points, but that the cinders will be chemically treated to keep them from be ing thrown aside by the wheels of passing automobiles. Brown, about 34, had been arrested in Vancouver, Wash., and would be returned here to face a probable charge of larceny by bailee. The man, state police said, allegedly took a 1037 Packard sedan from the Perry L. Ash craft agency here Saturday night for a demonstration ride and failed to return it. The car was found early this week aban doned on a Medford street, un damaged but with 600 additional miles on the speedometer. Police said that Freeman, or Brown, was arrested in Vancou ver when he attemped to enlist in the United States army. Tomorrow will climax the first six days of the semi-annual 'Ward Week" sale, now featured : at Medford's big Montgomery Ward store. All next week will be devoted to this spectacular bargain event, according to H. L. Brown, manager of the store, but early shopping has been ad-' vised to assure more completf selections.
