Pickem has suffered so far thl season, the gridiron prognostl cator was all set to try out a new and more reliable sysm of selecting winners thla week-end. He waa plan ning to tons the ancient crystal ball out the window and predict outcomes by flipping a quarter. But alaa, no quarter could be found to flip, either In this office or In Tod Porter's establishment a few doora south. One of the boys here had a skinny dime he said Pickem could use. but the offer was refused Pickem fully intends to keep this prognostication business on a high plane and not cheapen it by employ ing dimes. Tod Porter's penny was also refused for the same reason. Bo It was the old crystal ball again, and In ita depths. Mr. Pickem Imag ined he detected the following: MEIlFOIlIl-KL'rtF.KA. It will probably be a nlgh-scorlng till. Partly because nf sentimental reasons and partly hecnuse the Tornado Is really rolling, I'lckem hesitantly votes for Medford by a 10 to 14 count. KLAMATH FAlS-ASHLAND. The Pelicans have undergone a consider able shakeup of late, which should snap austafson's club out of Its tie slump. As Ashland la not up to usual strength this year, It looks like a Klsmath victory by a six touchdown margin. OREOON STATE-PORTLAND. Mat ty Mathews' ag'jregatoln will simply be outclassed by the Beavers, but Coach Lon Stlner won't pour It on. Oregon 8tate 20, Portland 6. STANFORD-U, C L. A. Stanford might surprise some of these coast conference teams before the season Is over, but this Isn't the time nor the team. The Brulna from Los Ange les will win by a healthy margin, about 31 to 0. OREGON CALIFORNIA. And the yellow sheet spots Oregon three points! Wowle, how do those lianrilcanpers flgger, any way. The Wehfoots will aTenge last year's 2R to 0 setback by trapping the Rears, 13 to 7. WA8H1NQTON STATE-WABHINa- TON. This Is a bad season for the boys from the Palousa country and ths Huskies won't help It any. After dropping two games the Washlngtons will ollck for a 13 to 0 victory. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA - I L L I KOIS. No trouble at all for El Trojan. The current hont wavo In Los Ange les will aid the Jonesmen In running up a 33 to 0 victory. Principal Leonard Mayfleld of the Tiger school, announced today that new ticket booth had been con structed at the south end of the stadium, permitting fans to park their automobiles on Melrose avenue and enter the field from that end. With right halfback Billy Plche definitely on the bench, at the kick off, with an Injured leg. Coach BUI Bowcrmnn of the locals said that Ike Orr, sophomoro flash, would open in that position. It Is doubtful whether Plche will be able to see any action, the coach said. The re mainder of the Medford squad is In good condition, although Louie Thur- man, quarterback, and Don Moyer, right end. will take the field slightly weakened by colds. The Eureka aggregation, considered one of the finest ever developed by Coach Jay Wlllard. planned to ar rive in Medford late this afternoon. It was not known whether the Cnll- fornlona would take a short workout on the stadium turf before tonight. Kureku 1,1 lie digger The two teams, both high-scoring outfits, will face off as exact equals in the matter of avcrnge weight, both lifting the Indicator to 172 pound. Eureka will boast a four-1 pound advantage In tho line, 181 to 177, while the Tigers will place 166-pound back field on the field against one averaging 188 for the Cnllfornlans. Eureka's wide-open attack Is led by fullback Bill Prentice, a 170 pound dynnmo who pnsses and runs and handles the ball on almost every play. With Gerald Couer. 158-pound right halfback, he forma the ex perience In tho light but fast bnck- Ileld. Both are one-year veterans. Chick, close observers of the mat game point out. in Just the type of wrestler who should be able to ho tle and hamstring the German terror. The cowboy is big, clever, smart. tough and a master wrestler. In addition, he is master of one of the game's most effective pinning holds the airplane spin, the maneuver that not only produces falls but nine times out of ten leaves the victim in such a state of befuddle ment that he Is unable to continue with the match. If Chick, long a favorite here, can manage to put an end to Schulz five-week domination of the mat industry in southern Oregon, his popularity will rise to unprecedented heights. The Nazi, by his cruel tac tics and dour disposition, has drawn the hatred of all grapple fans and a Schultz defeat would be hailed with gusto never seen hero belore. Pete Boloastro. Schulz' latest vic tim, will take on Speedy LaRance In the six-round middle event. Al though defeated by the German last Monday, when he missed a sonniin ber and crashed on the floor out side the ring. Bel cast ro displayed a violent attack that, if it continues, should cause the capable LaRance considerable trouble. The opener will see El Pulpo, gi gantic and clean-wrestling Mexican ace. tangling with Dave Levin, whose arm Is recovering rapidly from a bad case of bolls.
