Early notified the city fa thrrs he wanted iOO barrels of flour. 3.000 pounds of coffee. 6,000 pounds of sigar. 3.000 pounds of salt and 30.000 pounds of bacon. His note added: "We require of the mayor and town authorities $200 000 In current money for the iwe of thin army." Early gave the town the choice of furnishing provisions or money. The mayor and aldermen conferred with the banks and decided to pay in cash. Early aent a wagon int . town and the banks loaded It with bushel basketo of greenbacks. While Early marched on toward Washington, an argument arose hen as to who should pay the money. The city finally agreed to pay i33. 000 and borrow the money to repay the banks. In :B88 this obligation waa consolidated with the reM of the city debt. Bonds were Issued to cover It in 1918. Appreciation of the cooperation and assistance rendered by the resi dents of southern Oregon In the prevention and control or fires In the Rogue River national forest dur ing the past season was expressed today by Supervisor Karl L. Janouch at part of the observance of national fire prevention week. Mr. Janouch said that Individual citizens, news papers, chambers of commerce, local service clubs and commercial organ izations gave valuable cooperation throughout the summer and that the excellent fire record of the forest for the year la largely a result of that cooperation. The Rogue River national forest record shows that there were 1 SO fires during the summer, with very adverse weather conditions, and only 63 acres were burned over, the smallest acreage In the history of the forest. Only 28 of the fires were man-caused and the rest were set by lightning. This Is a decrease in man-caused fires of 20 percent under last year and of 10 percent under the average of the past five years, In spite of the Increased number of visitors In the forest. Mr. Janouch said that not only were the people careful to prevent fires but they also assisted in the control of those caused by lightning. He said that In one afternoon a storm, accompanied by little rain,' ; started 88 fires scattered over the entire forest and that the voluntary , services of ranchers and forest vlsl 1 tors, In reporting fires which they j saw. working on suppression and I furnishing transportation and equip j ment. were invaluable in controllln the fires while they were small ! The largest of the lightning fire was confined to an area of abou: two acres and most of them wen controlled before they had spread from a single tree. National fire prevention week 1: being sponsored by the Internationa Association of Fire Chiefs and Mi Janouch pointed out that the U. f. forest service Joined In the obsri -vanoe of the week because the 1m portance of preventing fire In cities, towns and homes Is equalled by thr. Importance of preventing fires which bring destruction to the forest camps, watersheds and mountain play grounds which make homes and com munities better places in which to live.
