The Medford department pointed to the dally toll In life and property exacted by fire and asserted that the way to prevent firea Is to remove their causes. "One of the chief causes Is care lessness, said a department state ment. "The lesson concerning safety against fire learned during fire pre vention week should be considered essential to every-day living and put Into effect throughout the year. No one should tolerate carelesa acts and practices or continued condi tions that lead to fires In homes, factories, farms or forests.' Hints Given "Feel your personal responsibility for the possible loss of life and pro perty by fire and act accordingly." The department offered the fol lowing aids in fire-prevention: Don't hang electric light cords on nails. Don't permit oily rags or mops to He around. Don't let the fact that you are insured make you careless. Don't use an open light when looking for escaping gas or in the presence, of Inflammable liquids. Put up "No Smokin?" signs, es pecially in hazardous sections. Don't use kerosene, benzine or naptha In lighting fires, or to quick en a slow fire It may result In death.
