But In "The nui Maid" there are two. Besides Bette Davla there la the lovely and highly capable Miriam Hopkins, who has atarred in many a wpnowrn pro duction on her own account. This Is th first time, since they reached stardom that either have shared star ring billing with another of their own sex. With Miss Davis and Miss Hopkins in the plcturizatlon of "The Old Maid" are such players as George Brent. Donald Crisp, Louise Fazenda, James Stephenson and Cecilia Loftus Tho picture was directed by Edmund Gouldlng, who made BPtte's last suc cess, "Dark Victory". The story deals with two cousins, Charlotte and Delia Lovell, who live In the same old house In aristocratic Philadelphia In the period between 1861 when the Civil War broke out, and the 1880'a. Despite the luxury and wealth with which the two are surrounded, they hate and envy each other for twenty-odd years. Then the daughter of "the sour old maid" this young girl Is played to perfec tlon, so they say, by Jane Bryan la able to bring mutual understand ing to them as their grey haira and lined faces tell they have entered middle age. The picture la a tense, gripping drama, with a charmingly picturesque period background. Houses, furni ture, equipages, costumes, all were revived with authenticity and beau ty. In honor of this being "Fire Pre vention Week", the management of the Craterian Theatre have booked as an added attraction with "The Old Maid" a abort subject dealing di rectly with the men who protect American homes and peoples the firemen. The short film Is titled "Un seen Guardians", and gives an ac count of the interesting work ac complished by these unheralded pro tectors of property and lives. Latest "War Flashes" are also added to the full program. Rochester, candidate for governor in his home town here last night was broken up by persons who threw rotten eggs, overripe tomatoes, cu cumbers and bananas at speakers. No one was hurt, but Night Chief of Police Jacob Braun said a free- for-all fight ensued. No arrests were made, but Braun promised an in vestigation. Rochester, a former school teacher, was seated In a fruit stand near the speaker's platform and was not hit by the missiles. R. A. Phlpps of Spring Creek, can didate for the legislature, and John Delagarza, Jr., of Ponchatoula, Roch ester's campaign manager, were struck. The nearby fruit stand was owned by Delagarza. "They started the barrage on Mr. Delagarza," said Brnun.'"aa he stood on the truck before the microphone. Then Mr. Phlpps was next. They took him down with a barrage, too." Harris, he said, admitted having escaped from the Alabama slate penitentiary where he was serving a term for burglary.
