One feminine star especially If
the be that double Academy Award
winner, Bette Davis might be con
sidered sufficient for a photoplay,
no matter how great. But In "The
nui Maid" there are two. Besides
Bette Davla there la the lovely and
highly capable Miriam Hopkins, who
has atarred in many a wpnowrn pro
duction on her own account. This Is
th first time, since they reached
stardom that either have shared star
ring billing with another of their
own sex.
With Miss Davis and Miss Hopkins
in the plcturizatlon of "The Old
Maid" are such players as George
Brent. Donald Crisp, Louise Fazenda,
James Stephenson and Cecilia Loftus
Tho picture was directed by Edmund
Gouldlng, who made BPtte's last suc

The story deals with two cousins,
Charlotte and Delia Lovell, who live
In the same old house In aristocratic
Philadelphia In the period between
1861 when the Civil War broke out,
and the 1880'a. Despite the luxury
and wealth with which the two are
surrounded, they hate and envy each
other for twenty-odd years. Then the
daughter of "the sour old maid"
this young girl Is played to perfec

la able to bring mutual understand
ing to them as their grey haira and
lined faces tell they have entered
middle age.
The picture la a tense, gripping
drama, with a charmingly picturesque
period background. Houses, furni

revived with authenticity and beau

the Craterian Theatre have booked
as an added attraction with "The Old
Maid" a abort subject dealing di

American homes and peoples the
firemen. The short film Is titled "Un

tectors of property and lives. Latest
"War Flashes" are also added to the
full program.
