Gold Hill, Central Point. Engle Point, Hoxy Ann, Phoe nix, Jacksonville, Lake Creek, Bell view, Griffin Creek, Talent and Up per Applegates Oranges were repre sented. Visitors who added Interest to the . gathering were J. D. Mickle, direc tor of agriculture at Oregon State college, and M. T. Wray, E. A. Faber, and R. A. Mlksche of the agricul tural committee of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. Spirited round-table discussion concerning the market situation on hogs, veal, beef, barley, hay, wheat, dairy products, turkeys, alfalfa seed, and hybrid corn was Interspersed with some splendid talks by Profes sor Mickle. County Agent R. O, Fowler point ed out that the most Important part of a cow Is the receptacle In which the milk Is prepared and stored. This Is called the udder. By a clever ar rangement this is divided Into four compartments, each with a separate tap. By this means the milk Is di vided at Its source, so that one part goes to the landlord, one to tho mortgagee, one to the government, ; and one to the farmer. Dairymen of the Oold Hill dis trict are considering installing a milk testing 'plant, and Professor Mickle explained In detail the new method of testing all milk used In the city of Portland. This method has been In use there for the last four months. It wts Inaugurated to satisfy the demand of producers and has saved enough to pay for the cost entailed, well proving Its worth. This hss been done under the milk and cream grading law. tt was urged that It be brought to the attention of dairy and cattle men that all tests for Bangs dis ease should be completed before May 1. A new man Is being placed In the field to assist Dr. Giuen in this work. Until the first of May Indem nlty Is available to those who must cull their herds and the test will be made free of charge. Jackson county has an enviable record, In that, only four percent of the cattle tested have been found to be actors, and It Is highly desirable to eliminate the few cases remaining. Professor Mickle Is very enthusi astic about the farmers' market at Salt Lake City and brought the sub ject to the attention of the assembly. He highly complimented the local Bjroup upon their cooperative efforts ana staiea wiat it would am to ine advantage of every county In Ore gon to follow Its example. He asked for the help of the farm ers In the apprehension of cattle and poultry thieves, and gave a de scription of the procedures followed by Illegitimate produce buyers and nursery stock swindlers. He urged the necessity of appealing to County Agent Fowler or the state police as soon as a loss 1b discovered, that the authorities may get promptly to work. JAPANESE ATTACK SENTENCE FARM HAND E PORTLAND, Ore.. Nov.- 17. (AP) The Oregon state fish commission In tends to solve the age-old riddle con cerning spawning grounds and mi grations of alba core tuna. Master Fish Warden M. T. Hoy said yesterday that Vernon E. Brock, department Icthyologlst, would be assigned to track the elusive fish. "The albneore Induntry of this state already has passed the million dollar mark In a few short years." Hoy said, "and we believe that we ought to know more about this valu able fish." Hoy said the commission's survey boat would be sent next spring, to pronpect mld-Paclflc waters where Honolulu fishermen have found tuna In. large numbers during months when they fall to appenr off the north Pacific mainland. Tuna first appeared In commercial quantities off the Oregon coast two years ago. HANKOW, Nov. 17. (AP) Paul JossJyn, United States consul gen eral In Hankow, made a second pro test to the Japnnese today against an Incident in which Japanese sol diers were alleged to have thrown acid at Dr. Logan H. Roots, American missionary physician. JosAlyn yesterday demanded In vestigation of the Incident, which occurred at Wuchang, November 13, but the Japanese consul general did not reply. Americans at Wuchang gave the following account: Dr. Root appeared at St. Michael's church and found the Japanese driv ing out Chinese refugees whom the mission owners have permitted to occupy the church. He closed the mission gates, excluding the Jap anese, whereupon they tore an Amer ican flag hanging over the zate and threw acid at Dr. Root. The acid did not strike him. Itinerant farm hand. rrcently arrested hre cn a larceny charge, was sentenced In circuit court today to five years In the state penitentiary, when he pleaded guilty to a district attorney's Information. Belec, District Attorney J. V. Long told the court, forged the name of his employer, Vincent Preschern, 'ocal dairyman, to a check which he presented to a Roseburg store In payment for a pair of shoes. He fled with the shoes while the clerk was consulting the manager of the store regarding the check. Long said.
