(AP) Insurgent military observers today expressed belief General Franco's re- conquest of the right (western) bank of the Ebro river had paved the way for an operation which should end the Spanish government's resistance. Government and insurgent lines today were virtually the same as when the Ebro campaign, one of the longest and bloodiest of the civil war, began July 25. But Insurgents pointed out the government's land and air forces had suffered such heavy losses they were In a greatly weakened position to ward off Franco's next blow. Officials here asserted the govern ment forces suffered 75,000 casual ties In the Ebro campaign In north western Spain and had abandoned a large amount of military equip ment, much of which the Insurgents salvaged. PORTLAND. Nov. 17. Screen Version of Arkansas Traveler on Sunday Program Among the happiest memories most of us will carry with us are those mo tion pictures in which Will Rogers and Irene Rich portrayed plain Amer icans engaged In plain American pur suits. Everybody who enjoyed these simple dramas of plain folks will en Joy the new Bob Burns picture, "The Arkansas Traveler," which opened Its four day showing yesterday at the Craterlan theatre. For "The Arkan sas Traveler" Is In the same chnnnel of tha Rogers-Rich appeal, and that spenks volumes, Bob Burns has been compared, and favorably, with Wll' Rogers a num ber of times during the past few years. But it has not been really evident of the similarity between th two as is now shows In this new film. That will sound like sacrilege to many Rogers fans. But tnat same down-to-earth, philosophical, human appeal that , so characterized Will Rogers Is also found In Bob Burns. If this is a sample of what he can really do, then, say we, let's have more of It. For It's been a long time anyone can reach out and touch the heart as Bob Burns does In "The Arkansas Traveler." He doesn't play the bazooka; he doesn't crack wise about Van Buren and his uncles and aunts and the rest of the relatives he's publicised so much In the past. He just plays himself, easy-going, drawling, home spun. And when you come rlffht down to It. It really Isn't fair to either Will Rogers or Bob Burns to be com pared. Rogers had his Individual style, Burns has his. But what a happy break that Burns came along after Rogers left such an aching void. "The Arkansas Traveler" Is about a small town. Its newspaper and Its people. Fay Bainter plays the pub lisher of the paper coveted by the local moneyosjrs, Lyle Talbot. Burns plays a hobo printer who stops In wjwn iong enough to outwit the covetous bigwig and patch up a sty- nueu romnnce ociwoen two young .oiks, pinyea oy Jean Parker and John Beal. living the while In a Jail cell politely provided by the friendly con stable, Irvln S. Cobb. Ther'a no straining for laughs or tears, but both accrue. It's probably the best picture for all members of the family that the screen has shown for a long, long time. Rialto Role :ir,!&m t Jean Hersholt again essays the role of beloved Dr. Luke (Dr. Allan Roy Dafoe in real life) In the Dlonne quintuplets' third and best starring picture, "Five Of A Kind," which opens a thrcc-day run today at the Rialto theatre. Hersholt. as he has in the last two pictures, convincingly portrays the genial doctor In a new and modern setting. in this picture the Quints are re vealed as real entertainers, singing, dancing, making muslo and fun, and telling their fans all about It. The story whirls through a series of ex citing situations, with the clamor and turmoil of metropolitan New York as the background. Cliilro Trevor and CesarRomero as two rival reporters, Slim SummervUle as the home-town sheriff, Henry Wllcoxon and Jane Darwcll In featured roles, and John Qualen again as Papa Dlonne, are among the featured players In the large cast. "Outlaws of Sonora," featuring the Three Mesqulteers, plays as the added feature with "Five Of A Kind." BERLIN. Nov. 17 ( API noi.nl..
