FOR NEW EFFORT TO Positions Are Established After Capture of Hukow, Main Barrier to Advance Up the Yangtze River SHANGHAI, July 5. T!ie JP anne army, which in a ye&r'i fight ing has crashed It way 45f miles up the "Yangtze river into the heart of China, established posit tors today for another major effort to reach Hankow, provisional capital of Gen eralissimo Chiang Kai-Shek's govern ment. The Japanese command announced today the capture of Hukow, 160 miles from the China capital and i principal barrier to the Japanese ad vance. Chinese withdrew, leaving munitions supplies, and there was little fighting after Japanese pierced Hukow's outer defenses, military of ficials said. Occupation of the city put the Japanese In position for a Hankov offensive along two possible routes, both extremely difficult. The one choice was a 150-mlle drive up the Yangtze river, winding through a mountainous area with its strong Chinese defenses. The other was a land detour to the west In an effort to sever the Canton- Vtankow railroad, disrupt transporta tion of supplies and force the evacu ation of Hankow. Foreign military observers thought the roundabout route would be the choice, with the Japanese avoiding a frontal assault on Hankow.
