P'A'OE THREE HARDEST HIT BY PARALYSIS WAVE No Cause for Alarm Seen in Nationwide Survey Number of Cases This Year Well Below Average (By the Associated Press) Infantile paralysis outbreaks this year, centering In the middle west, have resulted tn closing of many schools and other places where chil dren congregate, but In general have shown no cause for alarm, It was In dicated today , in a nation-wide sur vey by the Associated Press. The disease, nearly alwals most se rious In the late summer and early fall, appeared to be most prevalent In Illinois, Wisconsin t Mississippi and Nebraska, Below. Average. It was pointed out, 1938 was & year unusually free of tthe disease, and the number of this year's cases were shown to be well below five-year averages. Chicago closed her public schools Indefinitely after reporting 109 cases In August as compared with a pre vious August high of 99 and a 1938 figure of 23, which was about aver age. Theatre barred children under 16, and - playgrounds and wading pools were closed. Mlsslslsppl reported 385 cases since January 1, with 39 deaths, compared with a normal of 20 oases and four or five deaths a year. There were 25 cases In greater Milwaukee, as compared with a nor mal of four or five. Health depart ment ruled kindergarten and primary grades would delay opening until September 20. Milwaukee had 95 cases In' 1918 and 60 each. In 1930 and 1931. Omaha Schools Walt . The scheduled September 7 open- lng of schools In Omaha, Neb., was delayed at least a week as a precaU' tlonary measure to prevent spread of the disease, but officials remained unperturbed. There have been 84 cases In Omaha since May 1. Fort Collins. Colo., apparent cen ter of an outbreak, postponed open ing of schools affecting about 3500 children.
