(AP) Erneat B. South wick. 38. captured In Boise, Idaho, 18 years alter his escape from the Oregon state penitentiary, was a free man today provided he does not return to Oregon. W. L. Oosslln, parole board member, said South wick was caught several days ago. "We have found that during his 18 years of freedom, Southwtck 13 led a life free of crime," Qosslln said. "The purpose of a penal Institu tion is to reform criminals, but South wick has reformed himself, making lt unnecessary to return him to finish his sentence. "if he returns to Oregon, we would be forced to take action against him which we will not have to take as long as he remains out of the state." South wick was received at the penitentiary on March 13. 1919, from Wallowa county to serve sentences of one to 10 years and two to 10 years for larceny of a cow and as sault with Intent to kill. A month later he was taken to the state hospital for treatment and escaped from the hospital on August 13, five months after he entered prison. He was 30 years old when sentenced.
