Portable field radio was sent to the scone and a crew was put to work stringing telephone lines to the lira zon from a point near the Im nana guard station. The fire was In a region lnacces alble by motorized equipment and the flre-flghter took only hand tools, They bad also "to carry bedding. Food was sent In to them last night by a seven-mule pacx train. The area is accessible only by trails. First men to the fire sent word back that It looked serious and might possibly spread over 350 acres. H. C. Obye, assistant supervisor In charge of fire control, made a flight over the area late yesterday afternoon and aald the first report appeared to be somewhat exaggerated. From an al tltuda of 4.000 feet the fire appeared -to cover about 30 acres, Mr. Obye aald, adding, however, that he- might not have been able to get a clear lew of the blaze from such an altt tude. Mr. Obye was flown by Thomas A. uulbertson. a. Taking no chances, Mr. Obye mo bilized sufficient forces to combat a large, stubborn fire. He said the fire was caused by lightning several weeks ago or by a smoker. He said pre. sumption pointed to a smoker be cause a lightning blase would prob ably have shown up before, now and because the fire started along a trail through the area which Is used extensively by fishermen. Smoke from the fire was spotted simultaneously at 7:15 yesterday morning by both the Bald Mountain and Buck Rock lookouts. PROPERTY SALES W. Postponement of the 80-day sus pension of Consolidated Freight Lines Inc., recently ordered by the Oregon public utilities commissioner for al leged violation of the state motor transportation act, was announced yesterday by Phil McManamy, district manager of the trucking concern, aft er receiving official notice from the state commissioner. The suspension, which would have been effective starting September 10, has been postponed for 60 days while tha public utilities commis sioner reviews the allegations, Mc Manamy stated. Instead of being forced to suspend operations for 30 days . throughout the entire state, Consolidated Freight Lines Inc. will probably be financially penalized, McManamy aald. One of the largest trucking firms In the northwest, a suspension of operations would have thrown hundreds of employe's out of work for a month, McManamy point ed out. The original suspension was or dered August 18 by N. a. Wallace, ata.se public utilities commissioner In Salem. It alleged that tbe truck In": line operated Its trucks over routes not Inoluded In Its permit. of making payments to other truck ing companies, of charging rates be low those permitted In It permit, of granting rebates to shippers, of fall ing to Issue bills of lading, of falling to file copies of Its time schedule. and of making changes In Its sched ule without notifying the public utilities commissioner.
