I MADMAN TABS BOY TO DEATH ON ROAD QUTNCV, Calif., July 14. (AP) Scott Bays, 19, was killed today when an apparent madman, Sheriff L. A. Broden reported, plunged a knife Into the youth's heart. Bays and a companion had stopped on a road to take pictures when a grizzled, middle aged man emerged from r thicket. 'What can wo do for you?" Bays was quoted as asking. "You can't do anything for me. I'm going to kill you." tho man was said to have replied as he drew a knife and lunged at the boys. (AP) The now stat department of geology and mineral Industries, cognizant of complaint from sportsmen and com mercial fishing interests,, promised co-operation today in scientific stud- lea to determine the effect of mineral sludge on fish life. The department will consult the state game and fish com miss tons and federal authorities to learn It mining activities are destroying llsh. particularly in the world-famed sal mon and trout stream, the Rogue river. Budget provisions presented the governing board by E. K. Nixon, new director, allotted 16,G04 for grub stake loans, $8000 for equipment and operation of laboratories at Grants Pass and Baker, and 16,75U for the administrative offices at Portland. The grubstake w M 1 be Issued under state law allowing a $50 loan to prospectors for a five-year period with the understanding they, repay with 10 per cent of tho profits from mining ventures. The department will take over all data on mining compiled by the state planning board. A collection of mining books will be loaned - by Oregon state college.
