Last night, he related to city and state police, be waa awakened by a noise, and going to investigate, saw a man behind the counter. He challenged him. Spears said, and when no reply came, fired a shot from his revolver. The man hurled the glass top of a counter scales at Spears, who fired again as the Intruder dodged through the door. Spears called the officers who sold they followed a trail of blood a block and a half before finding Worden unconscious In an alley, shot through tfco left arm and right leg. (AP) Charles Elmer Staley. 47, brakeman on a Southern Pacific freight train met death Instantly this morning when he was struck by the No. 7 southbound passenger. Deputy Sheriff H. W. Koehler said the victim apparently stepped from the' freight Into the path of the fast traveling passenger train. The en gineer of the passenger was unaware of the accident and did not stop. Sta ley's home was at Roseburg. The body was taken to the coro ner's office here. VANCOUVER, Wash.. May 7. (AP) The swift north fork of the Lewis river claimed Tom Tusk, 40, of La Center when a barge on which Tusk and Allen Proctor were crossing the stream overturned. Proctor saved himself by grasping the cable on which the barge operated. The body was not recovered.
