PLAN TO ATTEND
HEALTH MEETING
Record attendance for the annual
meeting of the Jackson County Pub
lic Health association on May 35 was
Indicated this week when various
groups expressed the wish to greet
Mrs. Sadie Orr Dunbar of Portland
on tbta occasion. Mrs. Dunbar, re
cently named candidate for president
of the General Federation of Wom
en's Club, with no competitors to
date, will undoubtedly become a na
tional figure when elections are held
In 1938. This may be her lsst pub
lic appearance In Medford for some
time.
Sh will direct the round table dis
cussion at A o'clock and appear again
as main speaker on the evening's pro
gram. The public is cordially in
vited to both sessions, which will be
held in the county court house au
ditorium with covered dish supper
dividing the program.
Miss Mildred Carlton, president of
the health association, has urged all
persons Interested in Jackson coun
ty's health record, to save the after
noon and evening of May 39. In
addition to hearing one of Oregon's
outstanding women, known for years
as executive secretary of the Oregon
Tuberculosis association, they will be
given an opportunity to learn just
what Jackson county has done In
the field of health and what Is going
to be done.

EX-CONVICT SHOT

Ector Worden. 27, ex-convlct, was in
a hospital here today seriously wound
ed and facing the filing of felony
charges If he recovers, according to
Police Chief W. P. Blancett,
George Spears, proprietor of the
Old Town grocery store here, had
been sleeping nights at his store
since it was entered April ft. Last
night, he related to city and state
police, be waa awakened by a noise,
and going to investigate, saw a man
behind the counter. He challenged
him. Spears said, and when no reply
came, fired a shot from his revolver.
The man hurled the glass top of a
counter scales at Spears, who fired
again as the Intruder dodged through
the door.
Spears called the officers who sold
they followed a trail of blood a block
and a half before finding Worden
unconscious In an alley, shot through
tfco left arm and right leg.
Officers satd Worden served 18
months In the Oregon penitentiary
several years ago on a charge of en
tering the Blue Mountain creamery
here.

are more protected and come to the
retailer and consumer In better condition."
82nd Traffic Death
PORTLAND. May 7 (AP) William
D. Janney. 46. died of injuries re
ceived in an automobile accident De
cember 8. 1936, and sent Portland's
traffic deaths to 33 for the first five
months of the police year.

Charles Elmer Staley. 47, brakeman
on a Southern Pacific freight train
met death Instantly this morning
when he was struck by the No. 7
southbound passenger.
Deputy Sheriff H. W. Koehler said
the victim apparently stepped from
the' freight Into the path of the fast
traveling passenger train. The en
gineer of the passenger was unaware
of the accident and did not stop.
Sta ley's home was at Roseburg.
The body was taken to the coro
ner's office here.
VANCOUVER, Wash.. May 7. (AP)
The swift north fork of the Lewis
river claimed Tom Tusk, 40, of La
Center when a barge on which Tusk
and Allen Proctor were crossing the
stream overturned. Proctor saved
himself by grasping the cable on
which the barge operated. The body
was not recovered.
New rules drawn up for Ottawa
county Okla., Jails require that pris
