Juan Antonio Agulrre, president of the Basque sutonomous republic, no tified Madrid of the Espana sinking. It also was announced by the min istry of marine at Valencia. A fleet of government bombers swarmed over the Espana, raining explosives on her. One struck square ly amidships., official sources report ed, and the vessel disappeared quick ly and completely beneath the waves- The government bombers reached San Under only yesterday, brought by the Valencia government's minister of sir, Indaleclo Piieto, to fill a serious gap in the Basques defenses. Velasco Flees. The Velasco was reported to hare fled to aea. It was by far the most Important naval Incident of the war. The 10, 000-ton Espana was one of the two largest warships of the Spanish navy. The Jaime I. the other large dread naught, has remained loysl to the Valencia government. Reports to msny shore points plac ed the scene of the bombing about five miles off SanUnder, at the west ernmost point of the attempted In surgent blockade of the Basque re public, which Is loysl to the mala Spanish government. For months the Espana has har ried the government coast line. Gov ernment planes hsd msde numerous attempts to sink her. Early in April, she was bombed viciously off Ssnt ander by five pilots, but escaped with a captured coal boat and the next day turned her 13-lnch guns on the Basque coast. Only yesterday, she wirelessed s warning that she would fire upon any British merchant ship venturing within Bilbao harbor. 2 '4 Hour Engagement. Today the whole dramatlo Incident off Bpaln's northwestern ledge took 2Vi hours, from the time the British steamer Brora was attacked to the Aoment the Espana slid under the sea. The Espana sank three quarters of an hour after the first bombs hit her. Just as the battleship fosmed to the side of the velssco to help her seize the British vessel, fhe alarm was sounded ashore. Rapidly the government planes took off from San tender, down the coast west of BUbso. They roared In formation across the trio of ships bobbing In the bar; fce two men of war and their In tended prey, the British freighter. A rain of dart-like bombs slsnted to the aea. The Espana, st the time. was firing the last of a Aoaen shells at the British merchantman and the merchantman's radio was sparkling with SOS calls. Accurate Bombing. The serial marksmen worked with deadly accuracy, said reports reach ing shore. Aboard the Espana, the crew appeared In a panic. Without bothering to lower boats, many leap ed Into the water. The Espana was equipped to carry 854 officers and men. It was 489 feet long, displaced 16,140 tons under full losd. It hsd eight 13-lnch guns and formerly was the Alfonso XIII. Two other food ships, the Black hill for Bilbao, the Consett for Ban Under, left French ports today. Along the beleaguered, fort-enclr-eled Basque front ashore, the men of BUbso pushed their efforts to evacuate their women and children and to spare them from such Insur gent air raids as they blame for the devastation of Ouernlca. their ''sacred city," where 800 died Monday.
