Wash., youths are the latest to discover the hazards of at tempting to run tbe gauntlet at Med ford police vigllanco in a stolen auto, and Chester Franklin Green. 18, and Robert William Kllllan. 18. are today lodged In the city bastlle awaiting word from northern author ities. At 9 o'clock last night the city prowl car was making its way out South Riverside when the two city officers in It noticed something sus picious about the actions 'or two young man In a new Nash sedan. Swinging the spotlight on the two the officers passed, then swung back to make a more thorough Inspection. Deciding the time had come to do the disappearing act, the two youths took to the cover of darkness, abandoning the machine. The officers gave chase but lost the two In a maze of packing bouses. At 11:20 the two officers decided to look In the variou. light spots, and found Kllllan and Green devouring a. bowl of chill at the Brass Rail. They ware Immediately placed under arrest, for tt had been discovered the Nash sedan belonged to Charles Wing. Medford real estate man, who had parked it on a driveway on South Riverside while visiting friends. The two readily admitted the at tempted theft, police said, telling in vestigating officers that they had pushed the car from the driveway to the street so the sound of the start lag motor would not arouse the own er's suspicions. In the meantime an. abandoned Ford V-8 sedan had been found on the streets. It had switched license plates. Also the police had received a report from the Safeway sotre at Sixth and Riverside that two young men bad been found prowling around the back seat of a car tn their park ing lot. and that the two had escaped in a Ford V-8 sedan when clerks gave, chase. Green and Kllllan admitted that, too, saying they were looking for a rear seat cushion for the Ford they were driving, which they said they had stolen In Yakima. They said, tn signed confessions, that they bad stolen the car in the Washington city and had filled It with gasoline there, driving out of the service station mltbout paying and heading south. In Portland tbey stole a set of Ore gon plates and threw the Washington tags awey, they stated. On the way south they sold a spare tire and wheel from the car to get gasoline; at one place Green sold his boots for 60 cents and bought gasoline. Near Orants Pass, their confessions admit, they stole a robe, a flashlight and a .30-30 hunting rifle from a parked car. At the Coos Bay Junction with the Pacific highway they picked up a hitch-hiker but told police that the wayfarer bad nothing to do with the thefts. They said they' bad not been stopped by . officers between Yakima and Medford. Green said he had served 10 months tn the Washington state training school at Che balls in 1034, and that be had . been sent to the Oregon state training school at Wood burn tn July of this year for the theft of a car - tn Salem. He ran away . from the training school after three days, he said. Kllllan , assured police he had never before' been tn conflict with the law. City police here were awaiting word today as to -the disposition of their two youthful prisoners. Irrigation water Is being used on the Brennerholt farm tn, an effort to soften the soil enough to permit plowing. Very little fall grain has been seeded here and what has been put In the ground is still In the dor mant stage because of lack of mois ture to start sprouting. Some old timers c.a.m that the fall of "89 was as .dry, but Leo Caton, Sams Valley postmaster who grew up in the valley, deputes this, claiming it might have been a dry fall but theer was enoxigh rain to bring up plenty of grass, the ground having been green at Christmas. Heavy snows fell early in January of that winter, staying until March, when they melted with a warm rain, causing one of the valley's worst floods.
