T Fowler of this city and Mr. Fowler's mother, of Idaho, who Is their guest here, were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Balrd in Ashland Tuesday evening. Will Attend Show C. In Cat Mark Axtell of Grants Pass, one of the nine persons injured In an auto crash near Central Point Saturday evening. Is confined to the Josephine General hospital In Grants Pass, where' he was transferred from the Community hospital here. His leg, broken in the accident, was plac ed in a cast upon his arrival there. Highway Collision A Medford Crescent City truck, driven by G. H. Johnson of Grants Pass, and a house trailer pulled by a car driven by Mrc. Barney Hagen of Washington, col lided on the Pacific highway south of Grants Pass Tuesday evening, ac cording to state police reports. The house-trailer was badly damaged but no one was Injured, the report states. Wayne May Here Wayne May, for mer Medford resident now living In Oakland, Cel., arrived hee by plane yesterday to spend a short time vis iting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. R. May. He has spent the past two weeks vacationing, visiting in Chi cago. 111., Cheyenne, Wvo.. and Se attle, Wash. May Is dispatcher for the United Airlines at the Oakland airport. Cal., when notified of the death of her sister, Mrs. Florence Kallsh, 33. of San An&elmo, In an auto crash near San Rafael early yesterday. One other person was killed and three injured In the accident. Rally Date Set Local Scoutmasters have set Friday, November 13, as the date for Medford district Boy Scout rally, which Is to be held In the hlgn school gymnasium, it was announced today. Time is announced at 7:29 p. m. and troops may earn a possible 100 extra points toward winning the district rally cup for punctuality, ac cording to Frank Hull, district com missioner in charge of the rally. "Iron Man" improving Chester Parker, former restaurant owner who was designated an "Iron man" when an auto which struck him and knock ed him almost 30 feet Monday night failed to Inflict any damages other than minor ones, Is still confined to his bed but Is showing recovery rap idly, it was learned today. Mr. Par ker was more seriously injured than was at first believed, and Is suffer ing from many bruises and a wrench ed knee. He Is allowed visitors. Attend Presbytery Rev. S. H. Jones, moderator of the southwest area, Dr. Sherman L. Divine. H. F. W. Spllver and Dr. B. R. Elliott re turned yesterday after spending two days attending Presbytery at Myrtle Point. They returned by Bandon and Crescent City, stopping at Ban don, where Dr. Divine made an of ficial survey In regard to the re building of the Presbyterian church which was burned. Thero are a few fires still active, they report, and the entire country Is extremely smoky and depressing. Many new buildings are going up In Bandon, business section. Two Join Navy The quota for en listment In the U. S. navy from the southern Oregon district for October has been designated at two men. It was announced today by E. M. West, recruiting officer. The two men have already been selected. They are Stan' ley Rhoads and Byron L. Allison, Jr., of Grants Pass. The pair will leave Medford by train Tuesday. October 13, for final examination In Port land the following morning. Re cruiter West announced that appli cations for navy enlistment are be ing accepted from young men be tween the ages of 17 and 25. of good character and reputation, who can pass the examinations. MARITIME STRIKE AT TRAFFIC MEET Alex Chalmers, of the Chalmers Shipping Co. m Portland, discussed pnases of the maritime unions dis pute today at the weekly meeting of the Roeue River Valley Traffic asso ciation. Chalmers, speaking of the possibilities of a general strike when the present vruce ends Oct. 15. stated that it Is impossible to determine the likelihood of a strike but that In his opinion it would be averted, due probably to government - pressure brought to bear on one side. Chalmers added that the unions are not inclined to arbitrate but seemingly would rather deal with each employer separately. The altua tion, he said, appears to have defi nite political aspects. Jack Spalding, sales manager of Southern Oregon Sales. Inc., report ing on a meeting of directors of the northwest fruit subsidy organ 'zation in Portland yesterday, stated that the group passed on the final draft of the federal fruit subsidy plan and returned It to Washington. D. C. for signature of the secretary of agricul ture. Following the secretary's final ap proval, the agreement will be present ed to growers and shippers for sign ing preparatory to putting the plan into operation, spaiaing saia. Joseph Ostle, freight and passenger agent for the Southern Pacific rail way, stated that the line had request ed authority to publish a freight rate slightly above Hood River rates so that should a maritime strixe tie up Portland shipping valley produce could be re-routed through Canadian ports.
