MARITIME STRIKE
AT TRAFFIC MEET
Alex Chalmers, of the Chalmers
Shipping Co. m Portland, discussed
pnases of the maritime unions dis
pute today at the weekly meeting of
the Roeue River Valley Traffic asso
ciation. Chalmers, speaking of the
possibilities of a general strike when
the present vruce ends Oct. 15. stated
that it Is impossible to determine
the likelihood of a strike but that In
his opinion it would be averted, due
probably to government - pressure
brought to bear on one side.
Chalmers added that the unions
are not inclined to arbitrate but
seemingly would rather deal with
each employer separately. The altua
tion, he said, appears to have defi
nite political aspects.
Jack Spalding, sales manager of
Southern Oregon Sales. Inc., report

signature of the secretary of agricul
ture. Following the secretary's final ap
proval, the agreement will be present
ed to growers and shippers for sign
ing preparatory to putting the plan
into operation, spaiaing saia.
Joseph Ostle, freight and passenger
agent for the Southern Pacific rail
way, stated that the line had request
ed authority to publish a freight rate
slightly above Hood River rates so
that should a maritime strixe tie up
Portland shipping valley produce
could be re-routed through Canadian
ports.
