Call 1 1 R4 Petroleum Heat A Burner Co. Uaa Mall TrlbuiM vant aoi, Making Communists EARL BR0WDEE, the Communist candidate for president, knows his onions politically. Released from jail in Terra Haute, Indiana, where lie was held, as a vagrant, to prevent him from exercising his right of free speech, ho heartily thanked his captors. ' "Thanks, chief," he remarked to the Terra Haute head of police, "for giving me a much larger audience than I would have otherwise enjoyed." And later he called upon the nation, "to witness his im prisonment as the rise of fascism," which of course it was. Not the rise, literally, but the employment of the approved Fascist method, which is to deny free speech and crush human liberty by force. Had Browder been granted his right to speak, as the leader of an accredited political party, little or no attention would have been paid to what he said or did, at Terra Haute, Indiana. But thanks to bone"headed action of a smart-alec chief of police, Browder got front-page play, in the newspapers of the country, and the speech he wasn't allowed to broadcast, was broadcast by one of his followers to a greatly augmented audience. If Communism ever gets a foothold in this country it will be partly due to such illegal, un-American and incredibly stupid, methods to suppress it. Not only are such methods their own purpose. Instead of checking radicalism, they advance it. Instead of discouraging the Reds, this fascistic strong arm stuff, gives them a big boost on their way, for it makes martyrs of them, arouses sympathy among true believers in Democracy and fair play, where normally there would be none, and gives them free publicity that could bo secured in no other way. "But Afraid to Strike" - WHILE on this subject of communism, as a part of the antiRoosevelt propaganda, this issue is about as clear, as most of the others in this "cock-eyed" campaign. The first blast in this direction was delivered by Mr. Hearst, who charged the president with being a communist, and present ed documents from Moscow which ho claimed proved it. The Republican press, as a whole, did not fall in line with America's distinguished fascist, apparently placing no more credence in his alleged Soviet document."), than others which in the course of his enreer, his papers have published. Practically all of them stated definitely Roosevelt was not a Communist. That was silly, of course. But there was also, no doubt the Communist party was going to the polls and vote for him thnt no one denied. But now someone docs deny it. Not only someone, but Mr. Browder, the Communist presidential candidate, and his dusky team mate. Both of them, declare the members of the Com munist party, will vote for them, not Roosevelt, th,at American Communists have no use for Roosevelt, he is blow-hot, blow-cold type, vacillating, not dependable, (An opinion incidentally which publican friends, in completo So whatt Usually tho accredited leaders of a party, are the official spokesmen of that party, going to do, or not do is accepted paign apparently. At least we note in an menting upon the Browdor statement, that such an obvious bit of pro-Roosovclt propaganda deceives no one. The president is not a Communist, he not only did not ask for Communist support, but if given repudiated mains, the Communists are going ballots for tho Democrat io candidate. So it goes, the music goes nowhere. But this much seems fairly which will imt take tho responsibility for doclaring the president a Commiiuist, will take the responsibility for declaring he will receive that party's support, oven though the leaders of that party deny it. They will tako no responsibility for concocting the poison, but they arc not averse to distributing it by indirection, and thus reaping the political benefit if any! Look at Your Hole Card TpHE idea seems to be prevalent that the Literary Digest poll ho a rtAAte niicmtrl o Virtt TTa si a asivt in lonm u i , in forecasting the national result, in a presidential election but in each state. Tho national phase of the matter is correct. But in a presi dential election like this which is so oloso and so mixed; so unpredictable and unprecedented, those who are already cele brating a Roosevelt dofont, on the present Digest tabulations, are advised to look up the record beforo they wager their family jowcls on it, Tnko 1932 for example. The final figures of the Digest forecast a victory for Hoover over Roosevelt in New Jersey by 1"0,000, Roosevelt carried New Jersey by 30,046. The Digest figures indicated Hoover would carry Massachu setts, by 400,000. Roosevelt carried Massachusetts by 63,180. The total indicated a Roosevelt victory, in the country, and this was correct. But it did not indicnte a landslide, and an overwhelming landslide was the result Now while all the political experts agree, the election will be a boss nice, that the changing of just one state, from Lamlon to Roosevelt, or visa versa, may determine the result ; one mere ly has to assume, the Digest figures will be as accurate as they were four years ago and no more to admit, that as an in fallible barometer in this election,' the Digest poll is all wet.
